HELP! My engine just started a weird noise...

I notice that my car was making a loud noise, comming from the engine. My Father says it's the Crankshaft but I don't know? It does not tick until you give it some gas...you'll then notice a LOUD ticking/kinda like a knocking noise from the inside but the engine stays still and does not shake...kinda like something is hitting the engine from the inside. Car still runs but I am not running her. I NEED HELP! Is the crankshaft easy to replace or do I have to replace the whole engine? Which is more convinent? PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I RESPOND A LOT FASTER IF YOU EMAIL ME AT asianboy_forever@hotmail.com I've been without it for this ONE day and I'm already missing it soooo much. If it's the engine, does anyone know a great place in or around Sacramento, California? If it's the crankshaft, does anyone know how to fix it and how much does it usually cost to do it? Thanks to all of you.

do us a favour

go check your oil dipstick and let us know how much is on there

Thanks :)

I checked it this morning. The oil level seems fine...just really dark and it is due for another oil change. What could be the problem? I hope it's not replacing the whole engine....I think it's the crank bearing....=(

Most likely it is the rod bearings or the mains on the crank. I would pull the oil pan and pull your one and two rod caps and look at your bearings. You shold be able to tell if they are bad or not. If bad they will have groves in them or be burnt looking or even be a copper color. On the mains I would bust on cap loose and get some placty gauge from an auto parts store. then slide a little piece of the gauge between the bearing and the crank journal and retorque the cap and then break it loose again and pull the gauge out and see what measurement and compare with tsrm...

I replaced my engine with an imported engine for $2100.00. Much cheaper than a rebuild. Your sound is most likely a rod knock, it will only get worse.

weird noise.

that happened to my motor like a month ago. i think thats a rod knock. and thats bad man. the cheapiest, easiest and the fastest way to fix that is to buy a new motor.

suprra_girl 10-05-2006 10:10 AM

you have 3 options

buy a replacement 7m and hope it's a good motor
buy a replacement 7m and rebuild it
buy a replacement 7m and at least do the head gasket

it is more than likely rod knock
generally caused by engine running out of oil or possibly previous bhg and water got mixed in with the oil
or less common, oil pickup mesh/pump in the oil pan got jacked on, broken, then metal shards in your oil which then flogged out your rod bearings

good luck with the new motor (it may still be possible to rebuild yours but you will more than likely need another crank as yours may have taken a hiding)

"Taken a hiding" ............I like that! That sounds much better than , it is probably all f*^cked up! T

Thanks

There is an easier way than changing out the motor. You can take the engine mounts loose and jack the engine up and drop your oil pan. than you have access to the crank mains and the piston rods. I have done this a couple of times on my 85!!!!!!!!!! That will also be the cheapest aslong as you did not drive the car that much with it knocking. IF YOU DID THAN YOU NEED TO MIC. THE CRANK JOURNALS AND COMPARE YOUR READINGS TO THE SHOP MANUAL. IF NOT WITH IN SPECS THAN YOU WILL HAVE TO PULL YOUR ENGINE. Do what you can first before you go that route.

Hey, I've been out shopping around and found a 1JZ that I would love to put it in my car. Since my engine has a rod knock, I've been searching and found the perfect engine swap. Now, I'm wondering if the R35? (Tranny for the 7MGTE) would fit the 1JZ? Also, what other misc parts should I buy? Do I need another ECU? I'm so confused at this time. I also found another 7MGTE but if I could just swap out the 7MGTE to the 1JZGTE, I would definitely be happy! =) In other words, is there more to it then to just swap the engine or do I need to buy other parts? Thanks you guys!
