Default 86.5 and 87 symptoms

theres some wierd symptoms that i cant quite figure out. on the 86.5: when i go 3000+ RPM or about 35+mph i hear a squeaky rattling noise. i havent found anything in the repair manual with similar symptoms, so i have no idea what it is. at first i thought it had something to do with the front left wheel but i also notice that the spedometer needle bounces up and down when it does that squeaky rattling noise.

on the 87: when the car has been sitting for about ah half hour or more, when i take off i hear a squeaky noise in a sort of harmonic way (as the wheel rolls). as im driving slow i hear that constant squeak coming and going. also, when i slow down (ie brake) i hear a loud squeal. its not the brakes because i just had them changed not too long ago. even if i dont step on the brake pedal, even if i just slow down from friction i hear the squealing. it goes away after about a minute. i just had it lubed and still does it. any ideas?

The first one is the speedometer cable. Just replce it and the noise will go away.

Second noise is just a guess but maybe a wheel bearing going out. An even more wild guess is that the tire tread is separating or is a noisy tire until it warms up. Not really sure on that one though.

is it possible by any chance that the squeaky noise showed up AFTER you did your brakes? its possible either the wear indicators were not installed properly or the anti-squeal shims are in there funny and squeaking against the rotor.

This is gonna sound odd, but can you describe the squeak a little better? high or low pitched? does it seem to change tempo based on wheel movement (speed) or engine (RPM) Is there a grinding (like metal on metal being chewwed up)component to the sound? or is it more of just a nails on the chaulkboard squeak?

You mentioned it changed when you step on the brakes. Does the sound go from like a "squeak ...squeak... squeak" to a "SQUEEEEEEL" or some other pitch change?

not being there to hear it, this kind of information can help narrow it down.

^i was gonna ask the same thing. as far as the squealing noise, it changes tempo with how fast the wheel turns, not rpm. and yeah when i do apply the brakes it goes from "sweak, sweak" to "squeeaaaaakkkk." that noise did come about after i got my break pads installed but about a month afterwards. in fact, i remember it started when our rainy season started, but now that its hot and dry for the most part i cant see how that has any effect.

My best guess is that you have two things happening here. First you have a warped rotor, thats why it squeaks on and off as the wheel rotates. Secondly you either have the wear indicators installed improperly and/or your antisqueal plates and springs are missing, installed wrong or damaged.

Take your wheel off, remove the 14mm bolt at the bottom of the caliper, unbolt the 2 12mm bolts that hold the brake line to the backing plate, and swing the caliper up and away from the rotor. There are supposed to be two "V" shaped wires that go into the backs of the pads that keep the rotors pushed towards the center of the hub. There should also be some flat plates that go between the pads and where the caliper pinches them. Also make sure the two thin metal pad retainers are at either end of the pads and not bent so that they are coming into contact with the rotor.

here is the exploded view of all the front brake components:

while you have this all apart you should have a parts store inspect your rotors to be sure they are not warped or below minimum thickness...

hope this helps!

something else you might want to check since your doing that is your splash guard.. behind the rotor, sometimes is slightly bent and makes a squeal... its driven me nuts once....
