A regular tool box should be sufficient, mainly size 10, 12 and 14 mm sockets. You'll need some large hex keys for the head, my uncle custom made some cut from a huge hex nut. IT is crucial to properly clean all gasket surfaces but not to a degree that you scratch major grooves onto the metal. Make sure you sufficiently clean up the block surface (this is especially important). Get the head milled, replace all injector seals, replace any gaskets, make sure you achieve true TDC, and keep track of everything. Get a stock toyota HG, some ARP head bolts and you'll be good to go. I was basically a noob when I did mine, but now it runs great and I didn't have to pay over a G to get it done. Just takes time and patience.

I chose not to have a friend help and make it a true learning experience. I agree with changing the injector seals. I learned from not replacing them the 1st time around. They should be available as an injector gasket kit (each kit services one injector and should be no more than $6 a kit) available at most auto stores. Don't go to the dealer for injector seals, too much money for each gasket and o-ring. Replace hoses as necessary. Some may be dealer only, usually the ones with tight bends, like the 90 degree 3" heater hose on the back of the head ($20).
Pain in the ass items (not in any order): 1) ABS Sensor connected to the top of the tranny. 2) Installing the turbo oil line. (NA is NA[not applicable]) 3) Installing the ground line to bottom of intake manifold 4) Install the lower half of the intake manifold before installing the head with the EGR valve too, or it will be a PIA. I can't really think of anything else at the moment. It's not all too complicated, just takes a little know how, and some time and patience.

thanks for all the input guys. i guess i gotta go out and look for some large hex keys and a torque wrench, cuz i will need them. and i will also pick up the injector seals from an auto store. do i really have to get the head milled? from my understanding, you need to do this when installing a MHG, but not stock. i read somewhere that it wasnt really necessary when doing a stock HG.
also, is it alright to still use the head bolts that are already in place? i was told that ARP bolts are mainly for MHG as well, but it would add extra insurance i guess. |

It's got very good guide on rebuilding a head with pictures. don't use stock bolts since they are most probably too streched already and you will end up blowing your HG again buy arp bolts or studs also you will need to get your head machined if you want your gasket to last long. for MHG you also need the block machined Last edited by Strannik; 01-30-2006 at 01:16 PM. |

Your car is not going to see boost, get the head milled though and use a composite head gasket.

alright, well i just bought a complete gasket set online for my car. so that covers everything i need. and i also purchased some ARP studs for the job.

studs are better than bolts
but studs require you to pull the engine out so after the studs are in the head can be put back on otherwise the head won't be able to fit into the engine bay when studs are in
