It's setup like that so you are conscious of the act of locking the door. Many a person has accidently locked the door on cars that don't have this feature. In fact, a fello just did it the other day. The car was running, and it was blocking our smog test bay. Fortunately we have the lockout tools to open any vehicle.

My moms 92 Geo Metro does that. I dont know how I ever fiqured it out.

my 88 wont lock unless the car is off and key is out of ignition. you can try all you want to lock it but it unlocks it self. the only way to lock myslef out is to leave the keys in it or lose them

Pretty much every pre 92 toyota is like that, even most of the newer ones. It is to keep you from locking your self out. So if at the last second you think "shit my keys" like most people do, you let go of the handle and the door lock pops up. completely normal.
