I have found that after getting at those damn bolts up high on engine/trans, that it is much easier to pull the engine separately. That is one heavy beast with both. You have to have a good hoist for that. The floor kind will almost flip up on you if you don't have it set up just right while trying to pull both. The overhead lift is best for pulling both, but if the trans doesn't need to come out then just pull the engine.
