Default 1JZ vs 2JZ - which is better?

Any expereince out there concerning the 1JZGTE vs the 2JZGTE and installing the either nto a MK3 (1989)? Just curious. As far as I know, the basic difference between the 2 engine models is Smog controls and emissions (1JZ = non-US / 2JZ = meets US standards). Is this correct , and there are no other differences?

Has anyone installed a 1 or 2/JZ motor into a MK3 model vehicle? Any issues to be aware of?

I am thinkin of replacing my 7MGTE for a 1/2 JZ motor, but want to understand what I am up against from the vast experienced people in this forum.

Thanks!!!! Tom

1j is typically a drop in swap depending on what type of motor mounts you car has you need rear sump oil pan and you need to know how to do wiring

im getting one done on mine in the near future

trdbrad123 - Thanks for your reply. Here is a parts listing that I received from Andrew at the Suprastore.com. Hopefully, it helps you in making your decesion as well.

Bellhousing
Flywheel
Engine brackets
Fuel pump

Oil pump
Intercooler kit
Wiring Harness (can modify the 7MGTE harness and make the OEM work or you can get a new one that will be much simpler)
Oil pan kit (need a rear sump setup, most used engines are front sump. You might get a rear sump engine and not need this).
Downpipe (this is extra based on if your exhaust is stock versus after-market)

Sonyps307 - Thanks for your insight. I wonder if the 2JZ is a clean swap, as the engine size is larger.

No. The 1JZ was actually available in the MKIII. If you purchase a full front clip it can be a VERY straight forward swap... Neither will be simple or cheap though and if you've never done a swp before you're best off at least sticking with the same family of engine (M series).
