Problem Turning Over

I just finished fixing my head gasket on my car and reinstalling everything......now the car won't start or turn over.....all it does is make a click noise.....I think that i'm missing a ground wire some were and that the reason it won't turn over.....any suggestions on were this pesky wire might be located at?

If it's not turning over at all, start with pulling the EFI fuse and verify that you can rotate the crank (to make sure something in the powertrain isn't locked up.

Then check the primary ground from the engine to the battery and the power line from the battery to the starter (there are two wires which run to it: primary and solenoid, the solenoid obviously has power).

agreed make sure your starter is fully connected and is properly grounded.

Now I got the engine to crank....but no my head is leaking from the exhaust side.....If i didn't torque the head bolts down to the right specs will that cause it to leak or is it time to replace my heads?

What's did u two the head bolts too...?

Reaper6193 12-12-2011 10:31 PM

Well No it starts up and is running with no check engine light, but is pouring out oil from somewere but I can't find were.....any ideas?

87hilux7mge 12-13-2011 01:50 AM

sorry i meant what did you torque* the bolts too. and yes, i could see alot of problems ensuing, including a leaking hg if you didnt follow proper tq and or sequence.

you very well could have warped the head.

find where the leak is coming from first. if it is definitely from the head, you may have to do the HG all over, and have the head milled, if its not too messed up.

The leaking was coming from the drain line from the turbo that my buddy took off and i didn't know.....So then the new problem aross.....I need to know how to time the cam and cylinders and keep them in check....everytime they are timed, i start the car and then it doesn't stay in place....so how do i time it and keep it timed?

87hilux7mge 12-15-2011 05:52 AM

...you really should get a repair manual...cygnus wont pull up for me. but you really should invest in one.

you need to put the #1 cylinder at top dead center. then you need to verify whether or not the cams are timed straight up.

here is a pic that shows how the notches in the cams are to be located. if the #1 piston is at TDC, the your cam notches should be straight up. that should be a 0'0 cam timing.

then you need to verify correct timing belt tension. like i said, invest in a repair manual. good 25 dollar investment.

Don't buy Haynes.... They're vague and generally crap. Get the Toyota Repair and Service Manual (aka TSRM) for the right year Supra. They've pretty much got everything covered and it's step by step... easy enough for most novices to follow.

If you look in the MKIII FAQ section you'll find a thread or two with links to online versions and PDFs for a couple different years.

Does anyone know what the pins are called that are put in the cams to keep the timing gears from slipping?

cre 12-16-2011 06:01 AM

Dowels. :bigthumb:

I told the dumbasses at toyota that and they told me there was no such thing on a 91 supra.....good thing I walked out of there haha....so does anyone know there dimensions so i can have a machine shop down here make me to....and what the best metal to use would be thanks.....

cre 12-16-2011 06:11 AM

I just gave you the part number, you could just tell them to order the things and save the lip. ;)

Otherwise, they're about 1cm long and approx 5mm in diameter. Take a cam gear to the machine shop and tell them you need an alignment dowel for it and they should have no problem setting you up. If the gear is properly torqued there is insufficient force to shear even a mild steel dowel, but cold rolled would be my minimum preference.

Ok, how do u time this piece of shit engine?.....I'm trying to do the timing on this engine and it keeps jumping...

cre 12-19-2011 08:55 PM

Of course I do... but it'd be quicker if you look in the FAQ section. ;)

Car is running fine with a occasional pop in my exhaust, but the car won't boost right in first gear and then when I shift into second the car drops and hits 12 lbs in the tap of the pedal.....is that jus the boost lag or could it be something else?

87hilux7mge 01-12-2012 12:02 AM

sounds like a timing issue. just kinda wierd you get no boost in 1st, and the hammer drops in second. any boost or exhaust leaks? backfiring still makes me wanna think timing...
