Power steering hose problem?

The other night after taking a ride in my 89 NA and backing in into my driveway, I noticed a drip trail that wasn't water. It felt & smelled like ATF fluid.

Sure enough, the power steering reservoir was almost completely empty and there was a lot of my ATF fluid on the garage floor. After inspection, I noticed that the hose coming off of the reservoir seems to be wet & leaking near it's bottom most connection.

In the picture I have attached, it's the hose on the right (the smaller one) that I believe is faulty. How difficult is it to swap this guy out? Can I use aftermarket hoses on this or only OEM? What else can and should I be looking for while I'm down there swapping this one out? Do these hoses normally go fubar or should I be checking out something else?

eh good ol'e rad hose should fix it. slap a new on on there. NOT PLASTIC. Anything able to handle pressure will work fine id imagine. go buy a coil of that diameter for like 5 bucks and be done with it.

Or go to your parts store and get some bulk power steering hose. It's designed for oil/pressure, although typically if something is attached with spring metal hose clamps, there isn't much pressure that you're dealing with.

I just have a bunch of bulk air hoses laying around, so that's my go to move.

Anyone know where that rubber line is question is going to by the way?

Well I was way off, those lines are not the ones that are leaking. It looks like the small rubber/metal combo line that goes from the pulley to the rack almost dead center under the engine.

I've attached some pictures of the line itself and it's hex bolt connector.

Do I have to replace these entire lines, or do the rubber sections come off past the accordion/bellow looking piece. Do I just replace those and not the metal lines? All I see on line for power steering lines are those 2 foot long ones, and this one is maybe a foot from end to end. I pulled a foam rubber protector piece off the rubber line so you guys could see the yokohama rubber piece that is believed to be the faulty part.

That's one piece, must be replaced completely. Drift Motion has them in braided stainless if you're into that kinda stuff. Check ebay or parts store for regular ones.

If the fittings are not damaged you could try your local hydraulics specialist first they may well be able to remake the hose with new hose and crimps on the original fittings. That's what I'm doing with mine since they can use a superior grade hose rated for higher pressure, temp & abrasion resistance same as used for the lifting gear on my mates skip wagons etc

Thanks for the suggestions and tips guys. Any idea on how much those shops are charging you to do that?

I did check out Drift Motion's and while it does look really nice is this really the one I need? Seems to be a bit longer than what I need.

You can have most hydraulic shops (look for tractor and semi repair shops) make the hoses and they will probably have fittings as well. I don't think you will save any money though, just get the drift motion one or a stock one and be done.
