About to give up

I bought a 87 supra turbo that was freshly rebuilt. Well the kid did not put a thermostat in it so I installed one. I took it for a test drive afterwards and it overheated right away. Later I noticed that the rubber plug on the back of the engine blew out. Car was running very badly and would not stay running without giving it gas. I then pulled the whole motor and did a complete rebuild with bearings and seals. I had the head checked at the machine shop and it was all in spec, and it was resurfaced on the previous rebuild. I put it all together and the car barely ran and was missing very badly. After two months of not working on it a came across a parts car. So I redid the head gasket and changed the head, coil packs, plugs, wires. It is still missing badly. I have great compression with new je pistons and rings. Fuel pump is working great with great fuel pressure. I am getting great spark on all cylinders. I checked, double checked, and triple checked the timing. I know it is perfect. As of now the car will not stay running on its own, I have to give it a little gas. I've also check all the vacuum lines and they are all good. Please if anyone can help I will be greatly appreciated. Next I'm going to swap out ecu's to see if that will help. It is not throwing any codes at all. My name is Chris. If it's easier you can call or text 574-387-1777. Thanks

Tried running it with the airflow meter unplugged?

cfurlan 04-19-2011 09:35 PM

Not yet, I will try that real quick.

By unplugging it, it made it worst to where it did not want to start at all. It would go put put put and then die every time. Even when trying to give it a little gas.

Conga1991 04-20-2011 03:15 AM

Well it's not the sensor or plug on the afm then.

vbryanv 04-20-2011 03:08 PM

have you tried the idle air control valve (iac)

You could always put up some money and let the dealer fix him. Sometimes we get so focused we miss the oblivious. So support your local Toyota dealer and let them correct the problem. :bouncy:

seems like your better off doing a engine swap.

cre 04-20-2011 06:11 PM

Have you done a compression test?

cfurlan 04-20-2011 07:23 PM

I will do another compression test today

hmm, id say bad sensors somewhere or bad ecu wiring, but that is pretty puzzling...hell just buy a standalone, then u can tune it all lol. sorry dont mean to take your situation lightly. good luck with it!

cfurlan 04-20-2011 07:51 PM

How hard is it to get to the ecu, I have a spare one from my parts car that I can put in it. Same year engine and tranny.

87hilux7mge 04-20-2011 07:55 PM

should be on the pass side under the dash or kick panel. i think its behind the glovebox area, shouldnt be too hard to get to.

go get a haynes manual for it, 20 bux well spent. itll tell you where most of that craps at.:bigthumb:

cfurlan 04-20-2011 07:57 PM

I've got a Haynes manual but couldn't find the ecu location.

cfurlan 04-20-2011 08:00 PM

What would be a good standalone to buy?

cfurlan 04-20-2011 08:45 PM

I switched out ecus and it ran but not great. It revs up to 2500 rpms before idling down to 400 rpms and then barely runs. Giving it gas it has a lot of hesitation.

Sonyps307 04-20-2011 10:32 PM

Check the tps and wiring

cfurlan 04-20-2011 11:31 PM

I checked the tps and the wiring to it. I also tried adjusting it while it was running, but it didn't get any better.

vbryanv 04-21-2011 12:46 AM

I had a similar problem. With mine I could not keep the rpms at 1500, and when I took my foot of the gas pedal the idle would fluctuate between 400 and 600 rpms...
I had i bad IAC.

cfurlan 04-21-2011 08:24 PM

I will try and put a spare iac in today to see if there are any changes.

Since I do not have a vast automotive knowledge, the only thing I can think that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is the gaping on the spark plugs? If the gap is not right, could result in a misfire, or no fire at all.. :\
