rebuild kits need your help!

hey sup guys im looking to rebuild my motor in my 1988 7mgte twin cam, the kit that i found is like $425 for the non turbo and mine is non turbo but im not sure if it would be any diffrent if i would get the turbo one it comes with

This kit contains complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs (does not contain camshaft, timing kit or oil pump). Pistons & Rings: Std., .020, .040. Bearings: Std., 10, 20, 30

im not sure if it would be any better or if i would even be able to do it . because if i go with the turbo one its cheeper . the web site is

The 7mgte is a turbo motor or do you have a 7mge? And the pistons will be different.

johnvin 01-11-2011 12:42 AM

i have the 7mge motor. the non turbo , i put it on there wrong. so your saying that the kit wouldnt work for my non turbo ? i would have to go with the more expensive kit? what parts could i use for my non turbo motor from the turbo model ?

Green7mgte 01-11-2011 12:47 AM

id check on ebay man.

907mge 01-11-2011 12:59 AM

Rockauto.com has kits or magauto is good for oem. But the kit you are looking at looks more brand x. I would at least buy a nice headgasket and arp headbolts. And are you redoing the head also?

Sonyps307 01-11-2011 01:18 AM

The turbo kit would work but the pistons r lower compression which means on a non turbo motor less power

Sometimes you'll find kits cheaper if you search for "Cressida" instead of Supra... There are a couple different gaskets on the intake but that's all, EVERYTHING else is the same.

I've had good luck order OEM type parts from an eBay vendor named Mizumo Auto Parts. I don't see any full kits in their listings right now but you could contact them to see what kind of deal they'd make you. If you were to buy parts from their current listings you should be able to piece a full kit together for about the same price.

im looking to rebuild the whole top end as in the rods berings pistons rings and new head gasket and i plan on going with the apr head bolts i heard a lot of good revews on them . this will be my first car and my first supra i just want something fast and something i can smoke all my freinds cars in lol thanks guys!

907mge 01-11-2011 03:14 AM

Well here goes another supra to the junk yard. Is it an auto?

johnvin 01-11-2011 03:22 AM

what would be a good web site to get some good rods for it? i think im just better off rebuilding the top end not quite sure yet, the motor is just about ready to be pulled , when i got the car it hasent been ran for awhile i only payed 400 for it and the guy who i had bought it from put a new cluch and new head gasket on it and he drove it for like 100 pluse miles and it started knocking really bad so when i got it i put a new battery in it and started the beast up and like he said it had a really really bad knocking to it and i reved it up and it goes away just a tad bit but its still really bad thats why i think i should just rebuild it and also it has 272,000 miles on it ... what do you guys think i should do ?? THANKS SOOOO MUCH

johnvin 01-11-2011 03:24 AM

no its stick, and its not going to the junk yard lol because i love the car !!!!

907mge 01-11-2011 03:46 AM

Thats not what statistics say. But anyway you will still be slow with 200hp hauling 3500lbs. You still will be in the range of 0 to 60 in 8 seconds. Even a newer v6 mustang will beat you.

And wow that is alot of miles. I'm glad to see another 7m run so long. I would ceratinly say a rebuild is order as well as alot of other things. If you stick with the ge and it is rebuildable. I would work on suspension next which probably needs some care to.

Green7mgte 01-11-2011 04:06 AM

your better off saving some dough and buying a new engine. probably want a transmission to.

cre 01-11-2011 07:17 AM

The devil you know..... I'd always prefer to rebuild the engine I have (if possible) versus throwing in one I know nothing about. If I want to build one to have ready to swap during the weekend, then I'll buy a core and build it and drive my car while the new engine is being built.

ARP makes good fasteners, but the head bolts aren't THAT much better that the TOYOTA head bolts... they're even reusable like the ARPS, just measure them and inspect for pitting and scaling. Same torque 75ftlbs.... ARP studs are in a whole other class.

Green7mgte 01-11-2011 06:33 PM

is better then the one you don't.

I guess i should of said, " but you will still want to replace the seals and do compression testing among other things."

johnvin 01-12-2011 04:47 AM

i think im just better off rebuilding the motor so i know that its done right and so i know that there nothing else wrong with it thanks for the idea though :) what do you guys think the knocking noise would be ? a bad rod ? and what should i get for making sure the top end is done the right way ? pistons rings , all bearings, rods, camshaft, crankshaft, oil pump , ?? what else

Green7mgte 01-12-2011 01:29 PM

valve seals.. good idea to replace those.

johnvin 01-13-2011 08:31 PM

ok thanks !
