Default Help after rebuild 7mgte

Well after two weeks I finally put my engine back in. The car started but it runs like crap, almost like a misfire or something. I'm guessing it is the timing but I didn't have a timing light. I turned the crank by hand and everything lines up when the crank is at 0. I believe it's not suppose to be on zero so could this be my problem possibly?

yes, your problem is almost certainly timing. a timing gun is rather cheap and you'll certainly want to get one. I'm sure it will fix all your problems.

yeah you cam sensor need to be adjusted via a timing light. you can guess at it (adjust it while engine is running till it runs smooth) but for the 50 bucks for a timing light you know for sure.

I'm getting ready to try it in a few, I did try to do it by ear but didn't do anything. I also bought some ngk's so I'm gonna put those in first.

I just had my motor rebuild and the guys that build it had my distributor off a tooth or two and I had trouble getting it fire up but it did start and ran shitty had to pull out the distributor and fix it know it runs great and get a timing light it makes it so much easier To tune

Was that on a 7mge, mine is a gte. Well I changed the spark plugs and checked the timing and it ran a little better but it still sounds like its misfiring. I found one air leak on the back side of the intake. It is a steel hose that bolts to the intake. Its a very small air leak so I don't think it would be causing it to idle down to 400 rpm's and killing it. I really wish I could figure this out.

Having not experienced the results first hand, have you checked your crank is not 180 degrees out from your cams?
I would doubt the engine would start, however, if it did???

It shouldn't, I've made that mistake before. Before anything, FIX YOUR AIR LEAK. Also, did you set your timing with the jumper wire in the diagnostic box? If you didn't, your timing will still not be properly set.

Yeah I did check the timing with the jumper and it was at 10. It doesn't matter where I turn the CPS it still rins rough. I'll fix the air leak later today after work. One more note, it runs the same as before when I overheated the engine if that helps. It ran great before overheating though. The cause of overheating was due to a worn hose that blew out. Thanks all
