Default i need help with suspension

ok so my 87 is getting repaired i am throwing money at it left and right and i need to replace the strut which is about a grand.so my question was could i just chang the suspension to coilover with the same price or should i just replace the strut and the shocks are good and everything but i heard good things about coilover also i know nothing about suspension just the basics. also the car was neglected by the past own (which makes me sad cause it is a great car) and i am making up for it about 195k miles

You can get a complete coilover set for less then a grand. Google showed some for about $700. Or if you just replace the strut, because springs dont really go bad as easily, your looking at about 450 for tokico illumina 2's... which are pretty nice, its what i have. add some eibach lowering springs to those, is another 250 dollars. If you replace the entire coilover (strut and spring) you can install it yourself... if you are replacing one componet (strut OR spring) you need a special tool to compress one while seperating the other. So I would recommend a complete coil over kit, and replace them yourself.

Just keep in mind you get what you pay for on coilovers. And also just because you buy coilovers it does not mean you won't still have to pay to put them in if you don't do it your self. If I where you I would go with some kyb gr2s and lowering springs. That will be cheaper and save you money for other parts that will probably need attention. I have that combination now and it made a big positive increase in handling.
