Look for any leaks where the brake lines travel, if you see a leak, there's your problem. Probably time to bleed them also. Start at the passenger back, then driver back, passenger front, driver front. Unloosen the bleeder screw. To do a 1 man job at this use a broom or stick to depress the pedal and wedge between the seat. Tighten the screw. Release the pedal. Do this to each 2-3 times or until all the air is out. Make sure you have a full reservoir full of brake fluid before you start.

if there were a leak, you would not still be using the brakes.

the hydrolic lines would be empty and you would be pushing air...

if i had a guess without i would say master break cylinder.
bleed the system. i would get a friend to help the broomstick theory sounds kinda tacky. its better to have some one pushing the pedal through the floor...(also i would put a rubber hose on the bleeder screw, and then into a cup of brake fluid, that way in the event of someone letting up on the pedal accidentally, it will only suck up brake fluid instead of air. also brake fluid that comes out will only skeat into the cup)

if it happens again try pumping the pedal, if pumping builds pressure, it could be that the seals in your master are gone, and it builds pressure fine but when you try to actually stop, the pressure makes its way around the seals.

let us know what happens when your finished bleeding the system, and yes that means all 4 calipers.
