Mk3 part availability

Well right now I have a 1978 datsun 280z and i literally have to make parts for it there are not parts really available for these cars to mod the fuel system without spending an arm and leg. Now there are a LOT of mk3 supras in my area going for very cheap and i can sell my car in the current condition for about 3500 dollars. I was curious are there a big aftermarket for the mk3 supra turbo cars with a 5 speed and 7mgte? I know there is a large market for the 2j cars but I do not know if there is a large aftermarket for the the mk3s.

Info would be great!

as for the datsun i am MAKING and left rear control arm nothing is available...

lol more power to you on the datsun.. wtf is that. (1985)

to answere your question.. yes specially turbo charged with the more robust transmission.. lots of aftermarket parts..and a huge fallowing. id buy it right now.

3500? really...dude send some pictures of it.

its a 1978 8100 there about original miles it has the original paint- it has a k and n filter as the ONLY performance mod. I am going to paint it and make it mint before i sell it for that price it will take me a few weeks.

good to know about the mk3 supras.

what are you guys doing for a pcm? switching to gm computer or what?

Green7mgte 08-14-2010 03:23 AM

pcm whats that? power train control module..

its another name fore the ecu or ecm whatever you want to call it. the computer that controls timing and fuel etc. I would like to have something OTHER than mega squirt, not aem either. If i can run a honda or gm ecu than i can run the 12 pin chip for the ostrich from moates.net which then i can tune on the fly - very easily.

How available parts are is relative... There are MANY platforms with a better selection and much better pricing. If you're not happy from the lack of availability or cost of your current platform I HIGHLY recommend you shop around with the online retailers to see how easy it is to find some of the items you consider common and also the parts that commonly need repaired or replaced.

There are a lot of people putting down a good amount of power with just the stock ECU and a fuel controller; Then there are those running the stock ECU with the MAFT Pro (AFM deletion, fuel controller, timing control, boost control and closed loop functionality... it's pretty much what you get if stay one step below a full stand alone). The most popular standalone EMS is probably AEM's. MS and Motec aren't uncommon. I haven't seen anyone run a EMS from another make.

ah. yea im acquainted with the ecu. I wired in an air flow controller last year. but yea touching on what cre said the MAFT Pro is the most commonly used for the supra.

the biggest problem with z cars are there are non in the junkyards anymore and there is a following but they did not make enough of these cars like they did the muscle cars the vettes the pony cars. heck they made a ton of rx7s but with i don't trust rotary motors- i would rather build a car that has the motor in it already that is good to build. i am also looking at bmw e30 325is or an e36 obd1 m3 or 325is. there is a large following for them plus they have an eprom chip. but the price on those cars are much more than i can pick up an already factory turbo supra mk3 for. i have been watching the rx7s for cars that already have swaps done but they are mostly ford v8s which i am more of a chevy guy if i am going muscle.

so things like if i were to snap a control arm would i be able to find one? as far as the ecu goes guess i am not a huge fan of piggy back systems- but if there are a lot of guys running them with no issues... i just have seen issues with piggy backs like on hondas and dsm stuff etc.

problem with tuning the piggyback systems is mostly human error. the ecu's in the supras are incredibly advanced for the time they were produced.

but at the same time from my understanding they did not use any kind of eprom chip correct?

it looks like you can mod the timing instead of just the fuel curve on that maft pro system- i haven't seen a piggy back also tune the ignition timing before - it looks basically like a daughter board to hook up to the existing ecu that you tune with to mod the existing ecu code but through the maft pro computer. is this correct?

Green7mgte 08-14-2010 04:18 AM

to answer the eprom questions.. meaning if you say remove the batter form your car you loose your data.? no..
to answer how the maftpro works.. (ive only used an safc2 so ill state what i know from that ) it wires directly into the ecu and overrides the date.. telling it to do what you program in. essentially

faytmorgan 08-14-2010 04:20 AM

so its like having a daughter board then like nistune basically?

cre 08-14-2010 05:24 AM

EPROM is a type of flashable memory (usually with an onboard controller)... no, early Toyota's were not flashable. There were companies who would remove the processor (which had an integrated ROM) and replace it with a programmable daughterboard with flashable memory and another processor... but they're impossible to find and even harder to find support for.

The MAFT Pro doesn't work like a traditional piggyback nor does it work like a traditional daughterboard. The Main processor is still present and still following all of it's routing maps. The MAFT Pro (depending on the setup) wires in both before and after certain systems. Definitively, it is a piggy back... but it's one that's grown far beyond what has been done elsewhere. The overall compatibility of the system and its increasing popularity make it very well supported and you often find that you're able to help or get help from other owners running it on completely different vehicles. However, like any piggyback, it's still reliant on the host system to determine the base values and how to respond to changes whereas with a standalone that one box is it.

Unlike the NisTune the MAFT Pro is a self contained unit with it's own display and keypad. Tuning and datalogging with a laptop is still the way to go.

One more thing to note is that the MKIII does not have a wideband O2 sensor... it's Lambda. The MAFT Pro can integrate with a wideband (such as the Innovate Motorsports LC-1) for on-board tuning and also to monitor and automatically adjust for a specified AFR at WOT (very nice!) and idle and cruise if the ECU is placed into full time open loop mode.

The MAFT Pro can also be used to modulate the TPS signal or as a TPS/RPS switch (again, ofter very handy).

Now, like all other piggybacks the system does have its drawbacks as well. There are certain things in the stock ECU with must be bypassed or tuned around and you're bound by the fundamental base code of the stock ECU... including its quirks (like running very rich in open loop operation when that car is started warm versus after a cold start... there are ways around this but the existence of this bug pisses me off).
