Default I need your opinion on why my car shuts off

Hey guys,

Ok, so my 89 Turbo Supra had a knock in it. We swapped an 88 Turbo motor in but just left the 89 harness in there. everything is running good and strong but once it warms up... it just shuts off and wont start again till it is cool. We took it to a shop and they said all the electrical is working and they replaced and checked all the hoses. They want to try the ECU... I had the extra ecu from the 88 motor i bought but apparantly its different so I need one to go with that 89 wiring harness... anyway, do you guys think the ECU is a likely reason it does that? Thanks in advance1

Is the starter the original unt?? Check the basics first battery post, cables ect. check for a voltage drop from the batt to the starter. check the voltage at the solenoid connector. check grounds too maybe you missed a ground wire. good luck.

Since it cuts out when the engine gets warm I'm more inclined to believe you may have a problem with your igniter. You should check to see if you're getting spark next time it cuts out with an inline spark tester.

This could also explain why it fires once the engine has cooled down, since several times faulty igniters start having issues in extreme temps (hot or cold)

Did you use the 89 coolant temp sensor? The EPC shows they might be different.

Hey, so I saw that you're selling your car...

Did you get a chance to try the igniter? I'd hate to see someone lose a nice Supra like that (although if I had the money I'd jump all over it)

Anyway, I don't want you to give up without having the shop at least do a spark test after it cuts out. Any info you post on here could get us a step closer to helping you fix it, that is if you still want to deal with it.

EDIT: So I just reread that this is a TURBO supra, not a N/A (like I for some reason though), so I believe the function of the igniter would fall inside the CPS.

Bud thanks so much for the kind advice and nice words. I don't want to let her go I truly do need to have a vehicle that I can daily drive and if one of you amazing Supra guys can figure this problem out then I would very much like you to have it. Being a college student and on a low income atm... I just don't have the money to throw at her... even if she's almost done. This is definitely a car close to the finish line as far as completion goes. Figuring out this issue and some tlc and its gonna be a beauty.
