Idle Problem

So I got my 7mge running again. It was surprising that after setting every thing as in the tsrm twice it did not start. It was not till I played with the distributor that it did start. Has anyone else had that problem? Now that the timing is set to 10 degrees TDC and running well at the higher rpm it still has a little bit of a rough idle(not real bad, just annoying). I check the most likely things like vacuum leaks, tps, and isc, but no luck. Any ideas or previous experience?

I have the following for ignition if this helps:

NGK Iridium Plugs
NGK wires
Bosch Cap and rotor

I didn't think that the supra's had distributors!?!?! I thought they were all coil packed? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Turning the distributor is supposed to be only to fine tune what the crank sensor can't fix itself from what I have always understood.

If you have it at TDC and your getting spark when it should and none of the air sensors are bad...and you checked vacuum leaks....

then it should be running pretty smoothly.

I don't know y you would have to turn the distributor to get it to start if it is on TDC. But none the less...I am very interested!

7MGE engines use a distributor, whereas a 7MGTE engine uses a Cam Position Sensor and coilpacks.

It's likely that when the dizzy was installed, it was 1 tooth off, so after some adjusting it's back in time.

As for the rough idle, how does your plug valley look? Any oil building up in there? If you pull one of your plug boots, does it have oil on it? How long have the stated ignition parts been installed? Probably most importantly, did YOU gap the spark plugs (no spark plugs are pre-gapped)?

OH!!!! Okay... I'll I have worked on is 7mgte motors....

With the distributor being a tooth off i can see why it would have to be turned to start...

And moving the distributor while the engine is running can give you a good way of steadying out the rough idle.

Keep the distributor when it is to start it, and when its running play with it to see if you can get the idle to calm down a little bit.

Along with the suggestions the guy before me said.
