89 toyota supra non-turbo having issues

I just wanna say nice site and i have a small problem ... I bought a 89 toyota supra non-turbo and it was running fine all winter but lately its been having issues...

first ...it starting put puting.... so I did a tune -up

second when i finished i noticed it started to let out black smoke when i started it in the mornings for like 30 seconds then it would go away...

third..now it constantly put puts and lets out black smoke everytime i stop and go but when its going it dont smoke but still putputs..... when i punch it it takes off hard and fast but when i go easy on it it putputs and smokes..... Im confused... I added lucas to the oil and to the gas for treatment and put octaine booster but it still putputs......

the tune-up was done not even 1 month ago and the oil is black and i put 10/40 .... so my question is what do you guys think is wrong with it?

could it be my oxygen sensor? clogged converter? dirty fule filter? i dont know and its a colector but im getting real pissed off with the car and im ready to junk it..... its a shame cause it runs real strong on the freeway so any suggestions would be appreciated...and i dont take it to a proffesional cause i dont have the money to .... and no check engine light on so im wondering what could it be....please respond i really need help tyvm ttysoon

by the way it has a 7m-ge motor

i would check to cat convertor. one way to tell tis bad is to drive enought to bring everything up to temp, then shut it off. Wait about 20 minutes or so and see if the cat is still extremely hot, if it is, that could mean that it is going bad. hope this helps at all.

Cat's don't cause or eliminate smoke.

I'd start with a compression test, checking the coolant for any murky discoloration or oily skin and check for chocolate pudding under the oil cap. Could be running excessively rich but that's more than a bad O2 sensor will generally cause. You're probably smoking while moving too, it's just getting thinned out and you don't see it.

Oh, and oil color means nothing.

ok i put the o2 sensor and i ran it for 20 minutes and its till smoking black smoke but it seems to be less..... could it be that it still needs to burn out the crap in the muffler from the old sensor that wasnt working? i hope so cause me blood is running thin with this car....please respond with any ideas tyvm

Wishful thinking isn't going to fix the car. Check for diagnostic/error codes (see the FAQ section for details) and then the rest of my suggestions are above. Good luck with it. ciao

cre the check engine is not on so i dont think i could run any checks on it...I could be wrong but you know more than me.... my blood is running thin so i think im just gonna sell it.... tyvm bro hagd

by the way i just put the radiator and i flushed the whole system and put all new fluid in it and i checked it today and its fine.... and the oil cap has normal stuff on it.... so i just dont know whats going on with it.....

are you saying your check engine light is broken? so you are unable to read any codes that might flash?

or are you saying your check engine light is not on so you don't think your able to pull codes.. if its the latter then that has nothing to do with it.
run your diagnostic and see what your check engine light flashes.. trust us.

well fellas this is a update....i finally figure out the problem.....it was the valves that cause all the smoking and it only costed 300 to fix ....thanks for all the ideas ....i trully appreciate it

cre 04-17-2010 02:11 AM

Wow.... those valve stem seals must have completely disintegrated... :eek2:

PS, it's just "cost". :D
