02 bung placement

this is a general question about o2 bung placement.

I heard it is a better idea to place your wideband bung on the downpipe before the turbo vs on the turbo elbow itself. yes no? maybe so. all the aftermarket elbows i see come with an extra 02 bung for your wideband sensor allready installed. what is the downside to this?

On the downpipe before the turbo? The DP is after the turbo.

Generally, you want the sensor as close to the head as possible without frying it and while getting as broad a sample as possible (ie. AFTER any collectors, don't want to just sample gas from one runner). Mounting my wideband sensor in the 7M-GE's stock location killed the sensor in a week; While 7M-GTE exhaust is MUCH cooler some people have still experienced problems with using the elbow for mounting their wideband sensor; I haven't tried running with mine in the elbow... having a bung welded in further down is cheaper than $100 for a replacement sensor. My wideband sensor is now mounted in the most common location (DP, after the firewall in the 2 o'clock position)

lol ok then so using the extra bung on the elbow is a bad idea. ty for the explanation on why also that really does put things into perspective.

It really depends on your EGTs. The turbo converts a lot of the energy in the exhaust reducing temps; greater ignition advance reduces EGTs (but increases engine temps); higher octane fuels tend to burn a little cooler.... There are a lot of factors, but it comes down to the exhaust temps. If your wideband has reliable sensor diagnostics go ahead and try it out, if it over heats pull it asap and move it; I just don't see the point in bothering really.

Oh and make sure of the sensor placement before you drill your downpipe for the sensor bung; make sure the sensor is going to clear everything and make sure the sensor is higher than 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock or it may suffer damage due to condensation.

This is good info and should be in the faq. Placement of the wideband is essential to the life and function of the sensor (evidently). So why not make it easier to find for the next guy.

This question doesn't come up too often, a knowledgeable shop should already know the answer and the couple times I've bothered to look in the paperwork included with wideband controllers this is addressed. I'd be more inclined to just add a "performance mod roll-up" thread to the FAQ and include links to threads such as this in one easy to thumb through reference.
