To the best of my recollection, there is no slack to be had and both ends of the cable have pressed metal fittings or blocks which attach to the lever and actuator, respectively. I've worked on car's which, like bicycles, had only a pressed fitting on one end and a receiving end with a fitting to clamp down on the other... I'm pretty sure ours are not and the illustration in the link I provided appears to confirm it (granted, you can't trust an illustration to be completely accurate). I do know for certain that the trunk end of the cable terminates in a pressed or molded metal block/fitting.

Also, just in case anyone didn't notice and is curious, the trunk's lock cylinder also uses a cable to open the trunk, there's no direct linkage their.
