Anything is possible. Get a mechanical oil pressure tester gauge and check your oil pressure.(not the stock one)

The 7mge should last you many many miles, just depends on how it was previously maintained. Use a stethoscope to further narrow what the noise is. As i said it could be a multitude of things... Its not like the 7mge has a tendency to do any one thing. How it was treated in the past dictates what has happened now, there's nothing else to really say.

My 7M-GE has a very similar sound, and my father took a listen and said its probably wrist pin knock. I'm not sure though, because I have put over 22K miles on and taken it to the track a few times and it hasn't blew up yet. Just this past October it blew the head gasket, I had the head re-furbished so I know its not the head making any noise because the tap that it did have has been resolved by a shim job.
On a couple occasions when I start it up, and while holding the clutch pedal down I hear a very audible scraping sound. I let the pedal up and the sound subsides, I push it back in and the sound returns. After one or two pumps the sound pretty much goes away for good. The clutch master cylinder is fine, fluid is topped off. I'm starting to think my pilot bearing is bad and has been like that for some time, and that has caused some ill effects on the clutch assembly and that's whats knocking. The only problem with that is that the sound appears as if its inside the block, about three cylinders back. The first time my father listened, he used a makeshift stethoscope and heard the sound from the head. I have yet to stop by to have him give a listen since the head gasket repair though. The 7M engines in general have a tendency to blow head gaskets and develop rod knock, but there is a distinct difference between the sound of rod knock and this mysterious knock in the 7M. I know this because my friends 7M-GTE just got a serious case of rod knock, it makes my knock seem like it supposed to be that way. At any rate, keep us updated and I will as well. Good luck.

my 7mge also has a mysterious knock noise, but only at idle. I have taken it to the autocross course, and i abuse it every day and it hasn't really gotten worse, so i cant say i really know what it is. I suspected wrist pin as well but it isnt a double knock and my car is too low to use a stethoscope, and i have no access to a lift.

Well I guess its a question of time and who, then we may decipher what this knock is by that someone re-building there engine. lol. Hate to have it that way but thats the way its looking to be, but hey, as long as it still runs why complain.
Good luck. |

not sure what your stying to say. the wording was kind of weird... but from what i gather, your implication is that maybe the knock is due to the fact that i replaced my own head gasket.... im not inclined to think thats the case... as i asked the kid i bought it from if it had a noise before the head gasket blew, he said yes.. but dont get me wrong, i may be a mechanic but i definitely did a sub par job when doing the work... as i rushed it and just was stupid.... i cleaned the gasket area on the block with rags in the cylinders and all that good stuff but when i removed the rags there was some debris in the cyl walls and some fell down to the piston ring area... i didnt have any compressed air, so i threw it back together, knowing what the consequence could be... and now it burns oil.... im pretty sure i smoked the rings.. but in truth im ok with that, as i bought the car for 400 and didnt want to perform a full rebuild without knowing what kinda of condition the engine is in... so i figured i was going to re-ring and replace the bearings at a later time if the engine was good...but if this noise really is a rod knock then that would likely make it more reasonable to buy a new engine and swap it out.... and surely it would be a bonus to go to a turbo engine |
