speedodometer don't work

The speed Odometer don't work at all. Is it just the speed sensor or do I need to look some where else? What do I need to look at. It just had a motor swap , but the same motor went into it 7mge.

I was looking toady under the hood and the speed control device that has a cable going to the throttle is broken. I always thought it was only for cruse control. Does this have anything to do with the speed odometer? Or is it just the speed sensor on the transmission? Also I forgot to say it is a manual transmission.

speedo cable hooked up? did it break?

theres three pieces to the speedometer cable: one long cable (connected to the dashboard), one short cable (next to the exhaust), and an adapter piece (fits into the transmission).

look underneath the car on the passenger side, right above the transmission brace (which the exhaust passes under). there should be an adapter piece right there, screwed into the tranny. this leads up towards the engine, connects to the shorter piece, and eventually connects to the longer piece.

take them apart one at a time and try to spin the little prongs sticking out of them by hand. if you cant spin them, replace it.

i had to replace all 3. the short cable is 10 bucks from toyota, the adapter and long piece are both 100 each.

the long cable requires you (no other way) to take out the dashboard. its not terrible to do though. the other two pieces take no more than 5 minutes to replace.

make sure none of the cables are hitting the exhaust, or are in a spot that will let them get too hot...it will break the cable again.

i had the cable break off inside the housing almost at the bottom of the adapter piece. so would i have to get the 100 dollar one?

SideWinderGX 06-09-2008 03:51 PM

if that piece that broke was supposed to be inside the adapter, then yes. buy it used if you can lol.

i would also test the lower and upper cables (its super easy) to see if they broke as well...you never know. just try and turn the insides...if they dont turn no matter what, its broken. theyre not too hard to turn.

Thats kinda weird out of the both mark 3's that I have had I replaced that adapter both time and it cost 12 dollars from the stealership. You want just the pig tail not the whole cable. I am sure the 100 dollar one is the whole cable have them look at their diagram a little closer there is another part number there.

Can you put some pictures up of what they look like? Also when you say cables are they cables that work mechanically or wire type like a harness?

ebang 06-09-2008 04:25 PM

I just replaced my speedo cable the lower (short piece) is about 20.00 CDN. and the long one that goes into the dash is 180.00 CDN...from Toyota.

I will try to find a pic of it. It is a mechanical cable that is keyed at the end that goes into the tranny. The reason why it breaks it because of the turn put on it and the fact of it getting dry. Just remember to lube the cable by putting a little oil behind the connection before the pig tail and the movement of it will carry the oil up.
