Default Clunking in rear?

Hey, i'm new to the forum i just bought an 88 Turbo Targa Supra 5spd. The car is mint shape except the power locks don't work. And the problem i'm about to discribe.

I read alittle bit (i used search) and read something about the electronic suspension lights flashing it's a bad thing.

If i'm driving the car on a flat road, no side to side cornering or hammering on and off the gas will cause the rear end to clunk. It's only while going over bumps. The clunk seems to be alot worse in "sport" mode.

When i start the car and if it's in normal mode, i have 2 lights flashing at me, the closest one to the gauge cluster and the one furthist away. When i put it in sport mode, non flash. They're on solid. I looked under the car and tried to move stuff and everything seems pretty soild. Sway bar had no play by the looks of it and all the bushings seemed okay.

What do you guys think? The clunk isn't super loud, but it's definataly noticeable.

Well I do not have TEMS on my car but when you start the car the TEMS lights will flash. It's letting you know its working right or something was wrong. I'm not so sure.

As for the clunking, my rear has a clunk, the sound in my car happens when I let off the gas or give it gas, I think its 200k on the stock rear though.

I've heard other Supra owners saying that the rear sub frame could be cracked and causing a clunk. They also said you can't see the crack, if there is one, without dropping the rear. Good luck!

Ok well the flashing is a bad sign telling you that the TEMS computer is messed up or something is wrong in the system. Yes you do have TEMS that is what the norm and sport button is. Look in the trouble shooting guide for TEMS test Oh yeah TEMS stands for Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension. The clunking is prolly a bad strut or a somthing in the rear suspension broke or just wore out.

Have you checked your driveline? Sounds like you have a u-joint going out...

I don't think its that, I grabbed the drive shaft and tried to turn and twist it but it wasn't loose like if would be if the u-joint was going out, but I won't completely run that possibility out though.

Typically we find drive line slap in heavier set cars trucks.
Not so much with the supra.

U joint is what I was thinking, But I agree it doesn't sound like that.

Maybe the dif and or the tranny...., maybe it is the drive train.

But you'll have to find it.

Good Luck.
