Default Auto Tranny Issues?

I have a 88 toyota supra turbo with an auto tranny. I recently got the car from a friend and have not had much time to work on it. The engine smokes but seems to be strong so i think im going to change gaskets and stuff for now. But the tranny is a whole nother story... I put it into gear and no matter what it is in drive. When i drove it for a short period it would shift gears normal but no reverse. It also surges really bad. I was hoping that maybe these problems could be something simple like the shifter is loose and maybe the tranny surges because it needs a flush. The car sat for several years in a field. Hopefully someone has had similar problems or knows something that might help so i dont have to get a new tranny. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like your friend sold you a supra with a blown tranny.

You could be looking at 2 grand to fix.

That's your worst case scenario.

I knew the tranny had issues but i figured since he sold it too me for 200 dollars i could find a tranny at a junk yard if its really blown and have a fun car for not a lot of money... Hopefully. i was just checkin out what other people had to say if maybe it was just something easy before i go and get another tranny. Thanks

Yea Mine was doing the same thing then tonight on the way home from work. it just quit pulling. unless i padded the pedal. got it up to about 3500 rpm. no turbo boost was shown and it would only pull about 30 mph. I sure hope its not a blown tranny. Fluid looks clean and full. ANYONE ELSE>
