K&N makes good products, such as the cold air intake you were speaking of, and I believe that you can get a MAF sensor adapter/filter from them as well. However, the downside to K&N filter's is that when you clean it, you'll have to re-oil it, possibly causing damage to intake sensors. I believe it's AEM that has dry filters (don't need to oil them), which might be a little more, but better for your car in the long run.
If you're looking to keep your 7MGE Supra (7MGE being your N/A's engine code) as a reliable commuter, you'll do your car could use a good tune up. Get the timing checked (or do it yourself), check/replace the belts and hoses (don't forget the systems of vacuum hoses), replace spark plugs, distributor cap, spark plug wires, etc...
