I was in a locally set up go kart racing league when i was younger(13-15), And you seriosuly do learn a lot of driving skills from that. I won most of the time cause everyone else didnt know how to build motors, But everyone wasnt bad. Then one kid had to crash and brake his leg, And that was the end of that. :( I always wanted to dyno one of the briggs motors i built. It was one of the rules, You could do whatever you wanted to the motor, But you had to use all the original briggs parts. So i spent hours building them lol. Some of the ones I built were a lot faster on my gokart than the stock motor, But none lasted long. I had bored out carbs, Modified cams, Shaved heads and decks, hours and hours of port work, including making my intake and exhaust ports look like mirrors. I found later that this is useless, But it still looked cool. But you learn a lot from driving anything in competition, and anything where your trying to get around the track as fast as possible. You will really learn a lot about how your car handles and responds.

All I can say...and I think I'm one of the old and wise guys (48)...TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE TRACK!!! (Road course...drags are for wimps)
It's the most fun you will ever have and make you realize street racing is gay.

simann nice save

ive had 33s on a 88 toyota pu it definetly put a damper on things even with a v6 and the 33s on aluminum weighed about the same as stock steels on 30s

Will 18 Inch rims fit on the back???

How do you know what offset will work for you on the MKIII?
i got 17x9 in the rear with +35offset you guys think ill have problems getting them on?
with 255/40/17 yoko's i dont think it should br a problem

tellfromchico,ca 10-31-2006 11:00 PM

tires and wheels

hey soup, the offset for the 18x8 is 32 matched with 225/40 was perfect, the 18x10 is 35 with 275/35 it sticks out about 1/4 in which is okay because i don't plan on dunking it(comfort reason) but theres still room height wise to drop about 3/4 in the front i dropped 2inany tire wider than 275 on a 35 offset wouldn't work on my mk3 / same wheel and offset with 305s would fit perfectly on later soupras.

ravenmaster 11-04-2006 04:22 AM

I am running 18X8 on a 235/40 ZR18 and its going perfect :-)

Nice tires/rims for cheap

This site has nice cheap wheels/rims free shipping and all the goodies http://www.wheelmax.com

cars4me89 04-25-2007 01:26 AM

I got a set of Yokohama AVS ES100's from tirerack.com about $92 a tire. Fronts are 225/50ZR 16.. Rears are 245/50ZR 16. I'm gonna go up to lightweight 17's soon when I get the money.

cars4me89 04-27-2007 07:06 AM

Lexus rims??

anyone know if the stock Lexus IS 300 rims will fit straight up to a 87 supra hub? also is the offset the same?

Japanese supra tt 06-09-2007 02:05 PM

oo i run 255 falkens in the rear and 235 in the front.

they grip mad good, and theyre a harder compound so they dont wear out as fast as my tires tend to do (drifting)

cre 07-23-2007 09:23 AM

What size rims are you running those tires on?

Japanese supra tt 07-23-2007 09:26 AM

17 inches yo

cre 07-23-2007 09:31 AM

What width? I just ordered some 17x7's (yeah, I'm pooooor) and I'm trying to figure out what size tire would fit best. I'm thinking 215-225/45.

Japanese supra tt 07-23-2007 09:33 AM

the fronts are 17x8 and the rear are 17x9.

i just put some 215 federals on my front and they are flush with the lip of the wheel.

but if you wanted a little bit of a stretch, which looks nice, then 205s on a 17x7 would be sexy

cre 07-23-2007 09:42 AM

Heh, no, not into the stretched look, nor the "I got a great deal so what if the tires are 4" wider than the rims" look. lol. I'm looking for something that'll be fairly flush, have a decent size contact pad, but won't have tons of sidewall flex when cornering hard. I figure with the small sidewall I shouldn't really notice any more slop in the sidewall than I do with 215's on my sawblades.

Japanese supra tt 07-23-2007 09:45 AM

well if the tires are slightly stretched then it would reduce sidewall flex =D

but yeah 215s fit my 17x8s flush, so for 17x7's id go a little less wide.

cre 07-23-2007 09:50 AM

Bummer, so the great deal I could get is equal to:

Figures. Oh well, the rims aren't here yet and I don't have the cash for the tires anyway, so I'll have time to look around. ;)

Supra2NR 07-23-2007 02:28 PM

why only 215?

thats a little too skinny for 8'' wide rims
215 is what i got on my beater

u said u got 17x7
i used 225x45x17 in the front
and 245x40x17 in the back

less sidewall to reduce flexing, but enuff to be safe with potholes
and wider tires give you more grip

and one question, for japanese tt
using harder compound tires, yes they last longer but
do u have any problems with grip if you do a high speed corner?

Keep in mind, if you are concerned with true cornering and sidewall flez, profile in-and-of-itself is NOT the only consideration. The tire construction, design, and purpose is more important. Save your money for a while longer and get a good performance tire. It is always a trade off for really good grip Vs tire life but a good stiff sidewall will cost a little more. Most of the 'bargain' tires wont have that so I advise be patient, save your money, and get a proper tire. Since low profile and bling are in voque, there are many crap tires on the market which are just for looks. I had a set of really cool looking Bridgestones that came on my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT. They looked cool but felt like they flexed so much they were going to role off the rims. I replaced them with Goodyear Eagle F1's. Much better and may be a good choice for your Supra but dry weather only. Actualy got them pretty reasonable from Tirerack.com.
If you really want a great tire get Toyo RA1's...GREAT performance but may not last too long on a daily driver. (I have 225/45/17 on 8.5"rims)

Bottom line, try not to get cheap tires, but you can shop for quality tires and save money. (Another brand to look at is Nitto.)

Japanese supra tt 07-24-2007 01:13 PM

i dont have any hard compound tires lol just regular drift sets.

and i use 215s on my front because it makes the tire "stretch" to the lip of the rim and gives a little less sidewall to deal with, and ive never had any problem with them losing traction, esspeccially federals, the tread is insane.

eh?

supraman121 08-04-2007 09:23 PM

i have 225/50/r16s stock rims/wheels and kumho tires they grip really well on the hot days and pretty well on the cold days, there good in the rain as well.

And the SideWall is pretty firm as well, I dont lose any traction on the front wheels when corner just on the back when i gas it lol.

I dont know if anyone else found this site but I have been looking for decently priced MKIV wheels and this looks like the best place to me. 1996 Toyota Supra Wheels / Rims & Lights - Found Products
I like that it allows you to get the offset you want that it came with.

I was just wondering if the 17X9.5 in the back and the 17X8 in the front would work out for an 88 without having any fender rubbage.

I run 235/45 17's front and back. Lowered to the max with TEIN flex set to very stiff. This is 9.25 inches wide. No problem with fender rub do to width. Bottom out inside top on wheel well sometimes in front on track under very heavy breaking in turns. Can't go any wider in front but could probably go 10 inches wide on back, and plan to go with an 18 inch by 10 inch wide on next set in the back.

suprakid91 02-02-2008 11:59 PM

hey all. i just bought a set of kuhmo ecsta AST's for 63 dollars at discount tire. they originally wanted like 97 and i brought in a page from super street that said they were 63 at the discount tire warehouse so they gave me them. i was surprised. ha. but they are stock size and im also running stock rims.

just thought i would share my info if you want some cheap tires. but you have to put them on yourself. haha. but thats what my high school autos class is for!

areyes73 02-03-2008 02:53 AM

i have mkiv rims on my 89

Fitment

Ok, I really wanna upgrade from my stock 16's, but have a complete brand new paint job, so am imperitive on having correct offset. I also want them quite wide, anybody have suggestions, stick with 17's?, 18's? And what offset I need to buy?

-Scratch that, i'm going with 17's, what's a good offset and how wide can I go on the back? Looking at wheels I can only find like +38 to +40

supra_91 03-20-2008 05:24 AM

i would just go with the MKIV TT rims. i have them on mine and i think they look great. although ... i love the racing hart c4's on kwnates supra. plan on getting some for myself sometime :)

98fxdwg 03-20-2008 08:26 PM

I got 17's but I just bought them from my tire and wheel dealer. I didn't know to be concerned about offset. What is offset and how do I find out what it is on my wheels? Tell me that and maybe I can help.
Otherwise maybe just consult a tire and wheel shop that can tell you.

rocktownsupra21 03-21-2008 03:50 AM

wheels

you have to take into consideratiion the offset of the rims you have on your tires to not just how wide the rims are

btwilson86 03-21-2008 03:58 AM

Offset is the measure of distance the mating surface of the hub is from the center of the wheel's width (distance between outside (face) of wheel and the inside edge of the wheel). Offset is typically measured in mm, and a + offset means the hub is closer to the face of the wheel, and a - offset means the hub is closer to the inside of the wheel. Most aftermarket wheels you buy will need to have about a +35 to +40 offset (I believe that is for 8" wide wheels- Wider wheels should have a lower offset).
