86 Supra engine removal

Can the engine be removed without pulling the 5 speed transmission too? What has to be done to free the engine from the manual transmission? The book says remove them together but I don't see why.
Thanks,

Bill

Because it's utterly miserable. The higher you get on the bell housing the harder it is to get to the bolts. I don't think it's a killer, but you still have to unbolt the transmission hanger, remove the drive shaft, get a tranny jack under the transmission.... I think you get the picture. It really is easier and quicker to pull it all (at least that's how most of us feel).

agreed, in the long run. pulling trans and engine will take less time.

it does not take much time to remove the drive shaft.

Jdm 7mge

The JDM engine I'm looking at is listed as 87-92. Will it fit my 86.5 Supra. Also, they recommend chaging the oil pick up and pump. What's the reason?
Thanks!
