Default 5m-ge head rebuild

i am wanting to rebuild the head (to a minamal HG, and cams camshaft seals w/e else i may be missing) from my spare block and possibly put a good MHG in. and probly heat paint the outside of my head,

want to know if there would be any difference on anything in the tsrm online manual, between my 84 block and the 86 the manual is intended for.

also what is the best brand of MHG or a really good one for the 2.8L

does anyone have any experience with cams, i want to know a good brand to grab, price isnt a problem.

thanks in advance for any info

As far as headgaskets i would go with the HKS 1.2m. You will also need to have the head milled to garantee that it is square and will seal properly..By doing so you will also raise compression slightly and in turn a few extra HP.. I would also torque the head bolts down about 20ftlbs more than the tsrm recomends if you go studs then go up to 40ftlbs more.. Now the cams i have heard good things about the GUDE cams although HKS "did"
make cams for the 5mge but you will have to find a set of used ones or have some custom ground to there spec which you would need them for someone to copy anyway.. Good luck on the build i gave up on my 5mge days.. Ive been through 5 of them in 4 years.. Im going to do a SBC swap now..

Does the 5M use the same HG as the 7M? If the 5M uses the same HG as the 7M you'll see a significant bump in CR from billing and then installing a HG that's thinner than stock... could be a good thing could be a bad thing... depends on the health of the engine and your future plans for it. Just keep it in mind.

well its official. my 5m head is cracked, and 2 exhaust manifold bolts tore out threads and all.

just need money and i can get my replament head machined port and polished, aswell as all new valve-train. think ill top it off with a 7mgte head gasket just incase i decide to go turbo.

if anyone else has good ideas chime in...
