84 transmission swap

im looking into a 84 celica supra but only problem is i want manual and its auto...
will the tranny from a 7mge work on a 5mge ???

CanadianBak'inSupra 02-11-2010 03:39 AM

done some researching and it pretty much seems to be the same tranny as an 84.
so ill probly be looking at a clutch and flywheel??

Yeah, MKII used the W58. The only thing I think you'll need is a flywheel... and that might not even need changed.

I'm surprised to hear you got such a crap reception... that forum's got a good rep from what I've heard. :(

I generally try to stay away from MKII and MKIV discussions as we have members who are more knowledgeable than I with regards to those cars. I can fix them, but modding them isn't something I've had a great deal of experience with.

well thank you for confirming for me that the transmission is virtually the same. ive heard it is but i havnt got a positive answer really accept for 1 person on the celica supra forums....

ya the 7mgte used the r154 i believe is wat it is the only diferrence is the gear ratio the r154 has a shorter gear ratio than the w58 i believe not 4sure tho. good luck tho.

There's really not much difference in the gearing between the R154 and the W58, the big difference is in differential.

7M-GE (all years) = 4.30:1
7M-GTE ('87 - '88) = 3.91:1
7M-GTE ('89 - '92) = 3.73:1

84 transmission swap

I've never swapped between the auto and manual. Do you know if the ECU will need to be swapped? Good luck! Do you know of any lowering performance suspension kits? Thanks

The R154 uses a different flywheel, clutch assembly (obviously) and driveshaft...and, obviously the bell housing is different. Make sure you get all the right parts if you're swapping one in... it'd suck to get everything apart and realize your car's going to be sitting in the garage for a week now while you wait for a bell housing.

I don't know about swapping auto for manual in the MKII; If it's anything like the MKIII it's not involved at all on the electrical side, but I'll let someone who knows the specifics cover it.
