The MKII's fuel pump check connector, unlike the MKIII, doesn't bypass the ignition switch, EFI fuse, Main EFI relay or the circuit opening relay. These nees to be in known working order and the ignition set to "ON" to use with the FP check connector or the AFM FC switch for a diagnosis.
Do keep in mind that a bad fuel pump may power up and even provide "proper pressure" at very low loads. Checking fuel pressure at high idle and light throttle is a better indication, IMO.
