Blown Head Gasket?

Will the tell tale symptoms of a blown head gasket have to be present in order to diagnose? My 1986 idles very rough on startup with a knocking sound, when I give it some gas and let go of th epedal it will shut off. I do not see oil in the coolant and do not see water in the oil. I removed the spark plugs and do not see oil or water in the spark plugs. Could it be something else? any input would be appreciated.
