My 89 Supra

hey! i am new to the site. i've had a crush on the MK3 supra for as long as i can remember and can say that i am proud to own one! it is currently not running at the moment due to a thrown rod. partly the reason of why i picked it up for $150. here are some pics:

shaggy 01-29-2010 08:17 PM

What sort of weapon did you use to persuade the seller to go that cheap. HOLY CRAP BATMAN!

HiPowerMtrsprts 01-30-2010 01:42 AM

wow! what a steal
keep us updated on it:D

Update:

I found a 7MGTE motor for the supra finally! A guy locally has an 89 that now has a nice 2jz in it. he is getting rid of the COMPLETE motor for only $400 dollars. ARP head studs and MHG already installed! i'm pretty sure that i am the luckiest man alive at this point. needless to say, i almost screamed like a little school girl because i was so happy that i came across this deal! i will keep you all updated as the weeks come!

BlueTuner 02-19-2010 12:05 PM

ahh you lucky boy. Keep us posted. Im gonna try to find a 2jz to put in my 89. If you can take pictures of each step in changing the engines would be great.

koryh2009 02-20-2010 08:26 PM

oh im pretty sure that there is going to be an overabundance of pictures! i'll probably have the motor in my possession within the next two weeks depending on when i get my tax return. the thing that concerns me about the motor is that he said it knocked a little bit before he took it out (which can be a bunch of different things) and how much horsepower he was running on stock internals. he stated that he was running around 500 horsepower before he took out the motor. im thinking a complete tear down is going to be necessary when i get it. other than that, the only things i need now is a good CT-26 and a R154 tranny!

koryh2009 02-22-2010 03:02 AM

the old motor is finally coming out on tuesday! im going to see what is still usable from the old motor. pictures will be up of the motor coming out and the damage from the thrown rod shortly after it is pulled out!

BlueTuner 02-22-2010 03:48 AM

Nice, will be waiting, i just noticed that the first picture of your car on the trailer, the hood is up. Did you drive it home with the hood up?

koryh2009 02-22-2010 05:55 AM

no, we took the pressure washer to the car when we got it back. i didnt have the patience to take it off of the trailer before i started cleaning it up! it dumped oil all down the guys driveway that i bought it from and on the trailer itself. gotta love thrown rods ;)

koryh2009 02-24-2010 06:09 AM

after a long freaking day of tooling around on the supra, i finally got the motor and transmission taken out! here are the pictures of the stuff i did today.

Meh, it'll buff right out. ;)

On a side note I LOVE the collection you've got happening in your back yard!

TripleC 02-24-2010 02:49 PM

I second Cre Wow what a collection. Now what the hell are you doing with an import next to all those classics

koryh2009 02-24-2010 05:13 PM

those are all my grandfathers. i've tried to get one from him, but he seems to think that he needs ALL of them! they're all 52-54 chevys

Cameroonski 02-26-2010 01:26 AM

Wow, EPIC! haha :eek3:

haha! which part, the collection of 50's chevys or how messed up the motor is?

koryh2009 02-26-2010 06:14 AM

less than two weeks left until i go and pick up the other motor! once i get it, im going to tear it down and see what the knock is coming from and at that point, im thinking of going big or go home. wiseco pistons and eagle rods keep screaming my name. :x: also, i'll be in the hunt for a CT-26 turbo here soon. mine is pretty much toast...

A little bit of both. But mostly the fist sized hole in that engine. haha. I would hate to be in that car when that happened! Good luck man.

koryh2009 02-27-2010 08:45 PM

yeah, i bet it wasnt a pretty sound! thanks!

koryh2009 03-15-2010 09:16 PM

im having quite the argument going on inside my head and i kind of need some advice. its a simple question to say the least but should i purchase a stock CT-26 or should i go for a T4 with external wastegate etc?

livelaughslide 03-16-2010 03:39 AM

I came accross the same question, You can do 1 of three things bud,

1.) Make sure the stock is legit, and save yourself the headach for now and just slap it on, make some boost just to make sure everything is okay with the other million things that could go wrong before you get rid of your stock oil lines and plug water lines for an upgrade, and while your driving your stock mklll you put togeather i nice drop in turbo set up. manifold, ex. wastegate, dump pipe, oil lines etc.

2.) bite the bullet and get it done, do the nice upgrade deal with the sh*t you gotta do to get it in.

Or 3, Got to ebay search in supra turbo's, a brand called cxr racing makes a huge turbo, a t67 instead of the 26. that bolts to your stock exaust dp and manifold AND oil lines. sh*t even your stock innercooler piping doesnt need to change. the even offer a new downpipe the oen but not cast and NOT 2 1/2 inches, like the factory. you can get both shipped for bout 600.

I did three and got a new garret t77 thats in my map range. the cxr turbo spools and sounds and looks great, bout 30% cooler then stock, and caries the cfm great at 13 psi before boost cut. lol.

koryh2009 03-16-2010 04:51 PM

hey man, thanks for the feedback! on ebay and checking out suggestion #3 now!:x:

koryh2009 03-16-2010 05:42 PM

just bought a stock replacement. im just going to start out small for now until i learn the car better and feel more comfortable with it! the next question is going to be which kind of downpipe i should run! lol

livelaughslide 03-16-2010 09:47 PM

Lol, yea the t67 is a bit pricey but well worth it. but im glad you chose a responsable path.

Megan offers a nice down pipe. even with the stock turbo. i could take a pic but keep in mind mine's older. lol, its an entire dp that goes the 3 inch.

oh cool! yeah, i am leaning more towards a divorced downpipe. there's one on ebay for about $260 that i really like. what do you think about them? btw, thanks for answering the thousands of questions that i have!

livelaughslide 03-18-2010 01:30 AM

I seen it, hounistly you would think for so cheap the welds would look like bubble gum, or the sainless would rust even. but i found it to work great for the 240. same brand, same ebay account. I DID have to modify it a we bit but nothing crueshel. doubt you would have to do it on the supra, its DP path is way more forgiving..

And brother, its a pleasure. this forum has saved my ass more thimes then i blinked in my life. lol,

koryh2009 04-07-2010 06:17 PM

well, after a long freaking wait, i am finally going to pick up the new motor on friday! the car should be up and running soon!!!!!!!!!! :offwall:

koryh2009 04-09-2010 06:52 PM

i have a real quick question for those that come across this thread. i've been thinking about buying a divorced downpipe and i have had my eyeball on one on ebay. it's $260 and pretty well crafted. the thing that i noticed on this particular downpipe when compared to a BIC divorced downpipe is that the generic one doesnt have piece welded to actually "divorce" exhaust from turbo and wastegate. how much of an impact will this make as far as exhaust flow goes by not having that metal piece welded to actually divorce the gasses?

cre 04-10-2010 01:39 AM

I have NO idea what you're talking about.... a divorced DP is just that... divorced. Also, eBay and "well crafted" seldom go hand in hand.... well, unless it's my company's products. ;)

Post a link.

koryh2009 04-10-2010 08:45 PM

alright. here was what i was talking about:

the ebay special: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT
http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/DSC06438.jpg

BIC: http://www.bicperformance.com/products.htm
http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/ddp2_new.jpg

notice on the BIC downpipe that there is a little metal piece that is welded between the downpipe and the dump tube vs. the ebay special where there is no metal piece welded in there.

cre 04-10-2010 10:15 PM

Okay, I gotcha. It's easy enough to have a wall welded in so I wouldn't base my opinion on that; You should get a divider welded on if you go with the eBay DDP.

koryh2009 04-11-2010 11:34 PM

its here!!!!:offwall:

the new(ish) motor:

87mk111 04-12-2010 11:22 PM

Nice. I think I'm gonna get the Bic ddp myself after I get a turbo motor

koryh2009 04-14-2010 05:26 PM

nice! yeah, i think im just going to spend the extra money to get the BIC downpipe

koryh2009 05-21-2010 03:53 PM

wow, its been a while since i've posted. as you all know, i did get the new motor for the car, but guess what? i ran out of money!!! as do most people when they are working on their car. anyways, i am getting ready to purchase bearings (rods, mains, thrustwasher) and rings. any suggestions to which brand i should use?

koryh2009 11-20-2010 07:25 PM

God, it's been a while since I've been on this site. I kind of miss it! Anyways, I'm finally getting to a point to where I can start saving up money for my baby. Once I track down a vacant engine stand, I am going to start tearing the motor that I bought and assess the damage that the previous owner did to the motor. Anyways, seeing as how I am a noob when it comes to the 7M, I'm just wondering: what's the best way to go about this? What should I do to the motor while it is torn down? and last, What's the best gasket set I should go with?
