Supra Rear-End Top HP

I was talking to a toyota Specialties shop guy and he said that to never put more than 300 hp to an '86-92 supra rear end or u will have no rear end. but ive seen supras in that year with well over 700 hp. how r they getting that much hp without shelling the rearend. and even if they get the rear to hold up can the trans stand that much hp too? i guess i just want to know how to get as much hp as possible out of both the rearend and the trans. does ne one have ideas?

It does not have to do with the rear end period, but more so on how the driver engauges the gears and the amount of stress put to the rear differential.

Drag radial tires having extreme grip are the biggest concern. Most people break rear ends this way.

Another would be lateral loads on the differential.

Bad driving behavior is another, someone slamming the gears to hard and trying to "grab gears". In other words its better to shift slow and consistent than to try to make the quickest shift in the world.

But these may controdict the thoughts of most supra owners (drag racing instead of road racing).

But either way with increased horse power your always going to break things easier.

Put it another way, Ryan Woon is running 1300hp on a stock rear end and transmission.

Many others are running consistently with stock rear ends in 500+hp 7m mk3's and Mk4's alike.

Even if you drive perfectly smooth, if you have the traction and hp, your gears are going to break. Thats what im trying to fine out about, what is the point where they actually break. You got it right with engaging the gears and traction, but the HP does matter lol. I can put slicks on a stock 1980 vw rabbit and the diff isnt going to break lol.

The turbo trans (r-154) for our cars can hold a lot. Maybe even 1000 hp. If you got a r-154 you got nothing to worry about.
