Next best option is bring it into Canada which is less restrictive with importing and have someone there register it and then drive it to wherever you are.
Biggest issue with bringing them to the US is that they have to be converted by a registered shop and that gets into the $8-10k range. |

when you say converted, i hope you mean like the engine and not the interior, that would be one reason to import one

The basics are to make it legal to US emission laws. Some other things are done as well but I am not sure exactly what they are. I'd be willing to be that if you googled for a bit you could find out exactly what needed to be done.
