Black 5spd 05-25-2005 01:55 AM

i have just changed the oil in my 1986.5 supra i put in 4 quarts of oil but it was right in the midle of the dip stik but today i checked the oil and it is at the add mark.
what should be the oil presure at idle???
how high should iut go at 3000-3500 rpm???
new to supras so i need to know this stuff, aske anything about beemers though.

KingDiamond 05-25-2005 11:11 AM

idle i believe it is 4.6 psi

and around 3000 to 3500 it should be between 36 and 72 psi

your probably burning some oil, rings are worn, not a biggie really car probably still has a lot of power like mine does even though she burns oil.

whoa 4.6!?! thats way too low. check to see if shes leakin it any where first. if shes burning it bad, you should see a faint blue color come out of the tail pipe once in a while.

suprra_girl 05-26-2005 09:32 AM

1. kingdiamond is correct, idle is 4.6psi.. we are high flow low pressure systems

2. if he was burning it bad it would be way more than a faint smoke now and then :P

i would say it has a leak, possibly rear or front crank seals

KingDiamond 05-26-2005 11:41 AM

don't under estimate the little information you can find in the owners manual :D

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-27-2005 01:27 AM

what is psi (if it is dumb could u still answer please. im only 15)?

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 01:30 AM

PSI = Pounds per Square Inch

Never a dumb question, better to ask and learn rather then try and fool people into believing you know more then you actually do. The more questions you ask the more you will learn.

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-27-2005 01:42 AM

thx kingdiamond. what does pounds per Square Inch usually refer to?

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 01:47 AM

If your asking the whole mathematical explaination as to how they figure out exactly, and how they came up with the measurement, i have no idea, but now that you mention it, it would be something nice to know. But as far as if your asking where else they use PSI, your fuel pressure, pressure in transmission, stuff like that.

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-27-2005 01:49 AM

so its basically everything about fuel.

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 01:53 AM

pretty much any fluid in your car that is transferred by a pump.

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-27-2005 01:59 AM

do u have a tach for that? or is it just something u pull out or what?
if there is a tach then ima look at my dad's toyota sequoia and tell u his pressure

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 02:03 AM

well from what i understand, and now i will correct myself, its not just fluids, cause i remember now , PSI is also gonna measure someones turbo boost.

Yes my car has an oil pressure gauge, but i think the turbo models have a boost gauge in place of the oil pressure gauge.

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 02:09 AM

Hopefully somebody else with more knowledge and understanding of the whole PSI thing will come along and educate both of us a little more.

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-27-2005 06:11 PM

my dad also added that it adds tire pressure mesurements too. is that true?

KingDiamond 05-27-2005 11:19 PM

yeah its also measures tire pressure

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-28-2005 01:10 PM

i also noticed on my dads main gauge it says "x1000RPM" whats that mean? (if its as worse as asking what hp is then ignore that comment)

suprra_girl 05-28-2005 01:52 PM

well on your dads rev meter where it says x1000rpm means revs per minute

it goes from 1 - 8 so 1 x1000 = 1000rpm and 2 x 1000 = 2000rpm etc thru the range :)

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-29-2005 05:53 AM

cool thanks. is revving good for your car?

suprra_girl 05-29-2005 06:37 AM

basically no free revving... i.e. in neutral and just rev to like 3000+ rpm is not good

if in your car or supra etc... find out where the power starts falling off and change gear there.. usually 5000rpm in a supra... but don't make this daily practise :)

jza80 Supra C-I TT 05-29-2005 07:41 AM

i c. go on what else? im hungry for info.

monkihead 05-30-2005 09:10 PM

i guess somethings wrong with my car then, regarding oil pressure. at startup she idles at 1500 and a lil over 40psi. after warm up idles at 650 right under the first hash mark...hmmm

KingDiamond 05-30-2005 10:28 PM

well if you have your owners manual, it will actually show you the different ranges that are safe for what rpms its running at, and i believe it mentions when you first start it , when its cold, the pressure is gonna be higher.

suprra_girl 05-31-2005 12:39 AM

also the car shouldn't be idling at 1500rpm cold, check your ignition timing, also is probly why oil pressure is higher than normal

but its distibutorless? can you adjust timing on these? i thought it was a maintenance free from timing?

suprra_girl 05-31-2005 04:36 AM

distributorless :o

have you got a 1jzgte?

if you don't have the above engine you have a cps or distributor

monkihead 05-31-2005 07:26 PM

i have a cps

jza80 Supra C-I TT 06-02-2005 02:17 AM

whats cps
is a 1jzgte a supra engine? is it a mk3 is that why it sounds so familiar? what do all the numbers and letters stand for?

suprra_girl 06-02-2005 04:03 AM

1JZGTE = 2.5L twin turbo 280hp stock @ the flywheel and comes in mk3's chassis known as JZA70
mother engine to where the 2JZGTE was born

cps = cam position sensor (distributor basically but electronic)

jza80 Supra C-I TT 06-02-2005 04:05 AM

what are cams exactly? is it older versions of pistons? whats the difference between a twin turbo and a twin cam?

cams are camshafts that open and close the valves. twin cams means 2 camshafts.
twin turbo'd are 2 turbos. any toyota engine(to my knowledge) with a "g" is a twin cam engine.
ie- 5mge<---6cyl, twin camshaft, electronic fuel injection
4afe<-----4cyl, economy head, electronic fuel injection
3sgte<----4cyl, twin cam, turbo, electronic fuel injection

Here is a link that explains what PSI is, but is complicated.

http://www.answers.com/topic/pound-force-p...per-square-inch

Basically it is a measurement of pressure applied to a 1" square suface, by whatever substance, generally air (a gas), or liquid.
Thus, there is pressure (psi) in these systems: turbo boost, engine oil, fuel, automatic trans oil, radiator, power steering, brake, tires, and (on some cars, air shocks).

And remember this, pressure in a system can be dangerous if there is a problem, or opening it up, and most systems under pressure are hot.

jza80 Supra C-I TT 06-08-2005 12:22 AM

thank u very much. i havent read the link yet but i'm sure its going to help alot. if u know anything else there is to know about a supra could u guys feed me the information?
