with the old mkIII's...

with the old mkIII supra what are the main pro's and cons with them? i am really keen on getting one next year but abit foggy on what i should look out for.
are they better in auto or manual?

dannydavi 07-02-2007 06:24 AM

i wouldnt say one is better than the other when it comes to auto or manual, just what you prefer, most people do prefer the manual since it is a car known for it's performance, and with a manual, your in control of that performance. some cons would be... well the blown head gasket problems. some pros.. power, cost (compared to newer cars with the same pwr), turns heads cause it's not the most common vehicle :D.

vixen_1505 07-02-2007 12:15 PM

thanks for that, nice car btw.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 02:20 AM

bits and pieces....

So is your car stock or have you upgraded it with a few things?
how much hp does it have?

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 02:59 AM

does anyone else have anything more to add? i would llove to hear more...:)

Things you need to worrie about from most improtant to less important

- The Hedagasket
- inspect the brakes and the brake lines
- if it is a turbo inspect the targa top seals
- test the interior features like the power seats, PW windows, PW locks,
- inspect the under body for rust or and other problems

The most common problems are

- The hg blowing
- The heater valve VSV not working
- fan shroud is missing
- under the car the engine shroud is missing
- leaky exhaust due to old gaskets
- Hood struts not working
- leather seats crack
- a few more but I will list more when it comes to mind.

Here are some pictures of my 87 Turbo Supra that I just bought about 1 week ago. I had paid $1200 for it.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 03:20 AM

gee not a bad price! did it have any of those problems u mentioned above? looks pretty well taken car of. i like the mkIII in that colour too for some reason.
does it feel heavy to drive?

dannydavi 07-09-2007 03:29 AM

yeah thats a nice car, and good price. my car has no mods, im runnin stock which i think is around 200hp. Yeah it does feel real heavy to drive.... well cause it is heavy, but not to bad i guess. doesnt change the fact that i love the hell out of it :D I just cant wait to get a white turbo with manual transmission, then i can start a build :D all in all i think these cars are great and anyone would be wise to pick one up, just look out for those price fixer uppers. i got mine with 89k miles on it and so far have put around 18k on it with in like 10 months and it hasnt acted up once, besides like a broken/cracked hose that was easy to spot and replace :D..

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 03:34 AM

yeh thats basically what i want to do, have either a white or black supra, manual, rebuild it and make it my own. it would be a great first car and i know i would just enjoy the hell out of it!
what engine does it normally come with? do some come with a 1jz?

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 03:38 AM

you know whats sad, theres a chick up the road from me thats has just bought a white mkIII for her first car and she is totally treating it like shit, she has managed to already crack the front bumper REALLY badly, she has stuck it back together with some duck tap, and she just throws the car around and i just feel really sorry for it! i hate people who missuse supras.

dannydavi 07-09-2007 03:42 AM

not in the united states. you can probably find them there in australia, def in asia, canada im sure, but here in the states they came with the 7mge and 7mgte.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 03:46 AM

yeh i think we have a few that have a 1jz, but im not sure. if i was to convert to another engine do you reckon the mkIII would fit a 1jz, if i didnt have one with it already?
what engine has your car got?

fulljapan 07-09-2007 03:49 AM

engines

North american model (in mk3s) mostly come with 7M-GTE(3.0L turbo) or the 7M-GE (3.0L N/A) ... the 1G-GTE(2.0l turbo) and 1jz( 2.5 TT) are the motors that were only produced in japan but many people import them ......

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 03:51 AM

oh ok.. so would you say australia imported their supras? god im dumb! duh how else would we get them! sorry just talking to myself then. sometimes i just ask stupid questions!

dannydavi 07-09-2007 04:06 AM

well the 1jz is common amongst the soarers in australia, so im sure if you wanted to do a swap for it later you wouldnt have to hard a time finding something, and yeah many people have done the swap before so it def does fit with some mods im sure, kwnate on this site has done it, might want to check out some of his posts.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 04:33 AM

oh ok, yeh thanx ill check that out.

200hp is pretty good for a stock, have you tuned it to perform better?
how long does your car take get to from 0-100?
what engines in your supra?

IHateHacks 07-09-2007 12:23 PM

I don't know if its been said yet but watch out for the head gasket on 7M's.

Here's some pics of my white 7MGTE 5 speed.

I've put $1000's of dollars into this piece. I paid $2500 for it 2 years ago. And I might be ordering coilovers this week.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 12:42 PM

pretty nice car, i like the white on mkIIIs

SupraDupra 07-09-2007 01:07 PM

I'll throw my hat in the ring too... :)

Pros:
Independent suspention and decent weight distribution make it a good cornering machine.

Just about any inline 6 is a bulletproof platform. Cure that head gasket and the 7M is no exception.

People recognize it. Someone wanted to race me on the freeway when I was bringing it home for the first time.

Cons:
Head gasket

Parts are expensive. Make sure you shop around ,and I have found the dealer to be cheaper than many online stores.

Car feels heavy under normal driving ,but when you start throwing it around it steps up to the challenge well.

Engine is a pain in the ass to work on since the intake covers everything.

All in all though ,if a supra is what you want ,you wont regret buying one. The pros outwiegh the cons.

vixen_1505 07-09-2007 01:16 PM

yeh i dont car even if there were more cons than pros it wouldnt stop me getting a supra, i would still ove it and just work around the cons
thanx for adding your say, its very helpful

dannydavi 07-10-2007 02:47 AM

no i havent tuned my car at all, just did preventative maintenance thus far, unless you consider ngk iridium plugs and wires upgrades :D. and i think the 200hp is what they all come stock, so mine is not out performing any other, but it does run good. I have the 7mge and i think the turbo 7mgte has 230hp stock so there pretty powerful cars.

scruffboy 07-15-2007 01:45 AM

What are those?

Ok, I've seen 2 Mk III's on this thread where the header panel (the upper part of the bumper, where the supra badge sits) that had round things under the headlights. What are those. I have an 89 and I don't have those.

Scruffboy

IHateHacks 07-15-2007 04:05 PM

Those would be headlight washers. They are hooked up to the washer fluid reservoir and theres a button on the dash to activate them.
