1988 supra transmission problems

i have recently bought a 88 supra non turbo auto.I put a rebuilt trans in and when i put it in low (L) the transmissin will shift from first to second and at about 30 mph it will automaticly drop back down to first causing the rpms to almost redline. The trans shop is trying to tell me that it is suppose to do that.Is this true any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

That does not sound normal. I would find out who rebuilt the trans.

Hearing your story just makes me want to do a drive-by on that shop.

That is NOT normal. Does it seem normal to you?? Of course not. It sounds like the tranny shop is managed by IDIOTS and THEIVES.

How do I know this, you ask yourself???

Because I have been in the car business for more years than you are old.

Plus...you live in L.A. WAY TOO MANY RIPOFF SHOPS THERE !!!!

Take the car over to another tranny shop and talk to them. They should test drive, and give you information for free.

If they won't, tell them to **** off, and go somewhere else.

thanks alot for your info on my problem..the major problem is i already paid for them to rebuild my trans and noticed the problem after i paid..so i have a warranty for a year so i was kind of stuck to take it back there.I thin my next stop will have to be court...he is trying to tell me he contacted a toyota tech line and they are saying its normal..I knew he was full of crap just wanted to double check..Thanks alot.

In 'L' it will stay in 1st gear.
In '2' it will start out in 1st gear, then up shift normally to 2nd gear, and then stay in it (unless you stop, or slow down, or floor it, then it will go back down to first gear).

If you let off at 30 m.p.h. you probably will get a hard downshift as the gearing is so low. For instance you take off faster in Low is because of the gear ratio is changed, this in turn causes the engine to slow down faster causing the hard and quick redline. This is normal. If you're accelerating and it down shifts you got a rebuild problem. Low gear is not really designed to go above 15 m.p.h. on an automatic. I do transmission testing (dyno and bench) for GM on the upcoming 2008 Tahoe Hybrid so I've got a lot of time on Automatics.
