Whistling Turbos

Hi,

I am new to this site, I am hoping to buy a 93-96 twin turbo supra. I have seen one I am very interested in but on the test drive there is a noticable whistle from the turbos. The dealer said its fairy normal and they all do it, I had the windows up and could hear is quite clearly.

Could anyone tell me if this is usual, or is it an indication they are about to die!

Many thanks

James

Yeah, the whistle from the turbo is normal.:)

A whistling noise from a MK III Turbo normally indicates the four mounting nuts holding it on to the exhaust manifold are loose, allowing combustion gases to escape via the turbo gasket. This is quite common if the top or bottom turbo support brackets are missing. But from the year you have stated you are referring to the MK IV Supra. Re Post your question in the MIV 1993-1998 section you may have better luck with an answer.

There should be like a whistle coming from the turbo when spooling up since the the turbine is spinning at a hight rate. Isnt there?

Thanks for the info, have posted in the MKIV forum aswell, just a tad worried about spending a lot of money on a new car and it may go bang not long after.

Cheers

James

What did they tell you over at the MKIV forum about the whistle?

Yeah, they advised that a whistling noise is normal, but a whining is bad news. So im much happier about buying the car now, I just hope the sale goes through ok.

Thanks for the advice

James
