Internal motor Question?

My 87 7m-ge had a slight rod knock when I got it. It did not necesarily get worse just bugged me worse. So (being poor)lol I went the cheap route and lifted the motor and changed each rod bearing one at a time. After each one manually spinning the motor to feal for binds. Found one bearing that had been really hot and some pits. I have put 300 miles on the car since the bearing job and that seams great! But now I hear a rocker arm I think so my question is, Being DOHC can you check and set valve lash just by removing the covers?Oh and the top end of the motor was supposably done a year ago but have found that mechanic fairly incompitant.

Not an "easy" job, especially the first time, and more so for a 'non-mechanic'.
