My crank pulley (harmonic balancer) is bad, making an ugly noise when I drive. My question is about a possible interchange: my Supra is a 1980 with an inline 6-cylinder....a nearby salvage yard has a pulley from a 1983 Supra with an inline 6-cylinder....according to the salvage yard, the 1983 pulley will fit my 1980, but the weight might be different. Does this matter?

Also, am I doing any harm to my 1980 SUpra by driving it with a bad crank pulley?

i would suggest you don't drive it.... and if the engine in the 1983 is still a 5mge and so is yours i would say the crank will fit... the weights being different won't be by much but you may feel a slight vibration or you might not notice at all

Thanks for your reply, Suprra Girl............I found a pulley online for a 1980 Supra, so I went with that one. We'll see how it goes when it gets here and I have it installed. The salvage yard tried to tell me this part would be in the hundreds (and I was born yesterday, right?).....cost me $65 with shipping, online!

lmao... i just thought about it... let alone being in hundreds in was actually only in ONE model of toyota and that was the m series celica supra LOL

u said u found the crank pulley online for $65...ive been lookin for weeks and the only place is the dealership they said $400 and some change were did u find urs?????????? i will buy one from someone if they have a pulley for a 5M-GE motor and if possible with the bolt and keyway for it my pulley came off and took everything with it...........lame

How does a pulley come off? The torque of the motor keeps that bolt tight does it not? I didn't think it was possible for a crank pulley to be thrown off.

Loose Crank Pully
 

Yes the pulley bolt can work loose and allow the crank pulley to slide forward enough to allow the drive belt to hang up. Can be very damaging to stuff under the hood.
I just removed my crank pulley to get at the lower timing belt cover. The bolt is installed with about 190 foot pounds of torque. The engine in on a stand and we had to lock down the start ring and use a pull bar with extension to get it to break loose.
Once the shaft bolt is out, the pulley will need to be pulled. I use a puller with narrow enough slots to install pull bolts inside the wheel hub. WORD OF CAUTION Do not use an external clamp type pulley remover. The balance is set in rubber. If the hub is stuck, you can pull the external portion off the rubber and it will ruin the pulley.
I placed a socket against the crank for the center screw to rest. I was quite surprised at how easily my pulley slid off. I just hand screwed in the puller shaft and it came forward very easily.
Just REMEMBER that when you go back you will need to place the large torque on the bolt in order to get it tight enough to secure the pulley.:)

Thanks for the tips, I have had my car on the road for a couple of weeks now. I used the engine to pop the bolt. Currently dealing with an overheating issue.
