My story thus far...

I'm 17 years old and have worked hard for my money as any honest person does. I bought a supra from what I thought was an honest man. The car runs great everything is fine the body is mint and but it has 200,000 km's on it which I don't mind because this guy was an older person and clearly looked after his vehicle from what I could tell. It came with a new starter, new radiator and had new spark spark plugs put in no more than 2 months ago and came with winter tires (But I won't drive it in winter anyways). I love this car it's what I've always wanted in a vehicle power, speed, and class. But with one problem. Before I bought it I had it checked out by my local Canadian tire with a 125 point inspection just to be sure it was fine. Nothing serious came up just a power steering hose slowly leaking and thats about it. But when I talked to Toyota they told me he had had the car in there right before last winter (vehicle has never been winter driven and has been garaged) and they told me that it most likely had a BHG, which I figure hey it's a supra its nothing I didn't expect. So I talked to the seller about this and of course hes a jerk about it now and whater I don't wanna deal with him. I payed 4,500 Canadian for this vehicle which is pretty good for the shape it was in. And now I'm going in on the 20th of Nov 06 to check everything else because the head gasket hasnt been replaced and I noticed I'm getting bubbles in my coolant which is a tell tale sign, and a little white smoke apon starting. As soon as I realized I had a a BHG I parked it right in my driveway and I'm not gonna drive it except to Toyota for the 20th what do you think I should get them to look for? I'm not a complete nube to vehicles, I have rebuild 1 engine before but I'm wondering for replacing the headgasket what do you think I should do? And what are the chances there could be damage to the block/head/pistons/ect? I wanna know what I'm getting into here and I could do all of this myself but should I get it professionally done to be safe?:dunno:

have the head checked for warpage. Maybe even send it in for a rebuild. At the very least have the valves reseated and the head resurfaced. Make sure they torque the stock head gasket to 70-75 ft lbs. Depending on your money get ARP head bolts or ARP head stud kit. Have the intake cleaned out, most likely it's got plenty of residue built up inside, as well as the throttle body. Others may have suggestions as well, but thats what I'd have done at the very least.

Well...

Thanks for your help man, anyone else got any ideas or advice? It would be duely noted and welcomed...

How much would all these different options/parts cost me roughly? I do have the $ It's just I don't wanna go too crazy and for the record I already have a 3'' exhaust on it and a brand new boost tube in my trunk...

Cheers,
-Mitch

this is a good road to go down. you can also replace gaskets, vacuum hoses, coolant lines, and maybe fuel lines if you want to do more

Thats it????? That low???

what the hell have I been driving this damn Legend around for then??? I kid you not....almost 3 grand for Legend repair bills like this....

I got lucky with that and found me some gaskets finally for under a hundred bucks....but otherwise the cheapest I have found has been no less than $265 A PIECE!!! Plus the labor to install....holy christ!!!

Around $500 is a steal for me....Supra...here I come!

congrats, i dont know why u were driving a car with lawnmower engine
in the first place anyways

damdog05 11-13-2006 09:20 PM

i was quoted much higher for a BHG. around 1500. you can always ask around at local shops, see what you turn up with.

Murd 11-14-2006 06:20 AM

If you want a shop to change a HG, 500 is about right, if you want em to change a HG right, 1500 is about right. Resurfacing the head and block, if you're doing a MHG, head if just a regular HG is usually what shops don't do that charge 500.

haha....Im owned on that one. Actually the Acura aint bad....Ive seen over 140mph....but it aint no sports car...and it isnt fueling the thirst I have for a faster car....which is why the hunt started for a Supra in the first place...having been a family guy for years and now the wife is a ex....I wanna have a little fun....so no real need for a luxo liner no more.

I saw you have a line on a car out your way....I used to live in Tinley/Orland area......at times I wanna move back...but the cold keeps me away

either price...$500 or $1500 is still a steal compared to the Legend....no shop touching that for under 3 grand basically and they recommend doing a TB & WP at the same time.....or in other words...more $$.

I am assuming that BHG on these cars has the same basic symptoms....air in the rad, possible oil in the water, etc??

again....I dont mean to hijack anyones thread...but didnt want to open another since we are dealing on the same subject here.

TIA

Supra2NR 11-14-2006 03:52 PM

the thing is the prices may vary from shop to shop

yes for a simple replacing the HG about 500 bucks

but HG, head machined, retorquing
i was qouted about 2000

and then rebuilding an engine after a BHG is whole nother story
