New to Supra's....is this a good deal?
 

Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and don't really know much about supras, or imports for that matter. I am however very mechanically inclined and have worked on numerous domestics.

I am now looking at getting a 1987 toyota supra with a blown head gasket for $1500. The car has the 3.0 intercooled motor with a turbo. It has about 135k miles on it. It is also a sport top. The paint is almost perfect and the interior is excellent except for a small hole in the driver's seat, a small crack in the upholstry right under the driverside window, near the door lock, and a worn steering wheel.

Does this sound like a good deal?
How much you something like this go for with a new head gasket?

well you might want to get a metal head gasket if you buy so the gasket itself is like a 100.00 then you have to get the head machined (not sure how much but woundnt say its over 400.00) so 2000 for a good mint condtion turbo supra is not a bad deal since i spent 3000 on my non turbo

I believe its been said 150, 000 times here, and every other supra forum on the face of this planet.....

You DON'T use a metal head gasket unless you pull the engine block out of the car, and machine the head gasket surface to a MUCH finer finish than came original. Doing just the head is a waste of time and $$$$$$$$$.

As for the purchase of a car with a bhg....$500 would be more appropriate, as you have no idea if the engine will need a complete overhaul. or if the transmission is ok, or the differential. or .......??????????

If the seller is so confident in those other items, he/she should get the bhg repaired before selling.

Well, napa has a gasket set for it that runs about $240. I got to drive the car for a little bit around town, because it just slowly over heats. The guy who owns it took it to the dealer about a year ago, and they tested it and determined it to be a head gasket, but like what has already been said, wouldn't know what was wrong for sure until they dove in. I've seen some remanufactured heads online for about $500. While driving it, I didnt feel or hear anything unusual from the bottom end, and seeing how it only has 135k miles, I would expect anything to be wrong down there. (But you never know). If I tore it apart, my guess is the worse case scenario would be a cracked head.

How much would a car like this go for if I fixed the head gasket and tried to re-sell it?
