New Supra Driver

Hey everyone, I'm looking into buying a 1989 Supra turbo.
This is what the Ad Says.

"1989 toyota supra 182k new motor has 80k and turbo. New motor mounts new battery new cluch new radiator.Runs excellent drive excellent and look excellent. $3200"

Is this a good deal or should I be cautious?

I currently own a 97 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST and this car is never not broken down. It seems I'm never done repairing the damn thing.

Are the Supras more reliable, or should i second guess buying one. I can't have a car that's always broken.

Thanks for all the information.

mk3's are very reliable except for the headgasket issue

its a supra-tumor would be the best analogy
cuz if not fixed it can cause cancer and then an eventual death

cuz the factory headgasket is not strong enough
and it wasnt torqued properly for the factory
proper retourqing of the head
and a metal headgasket
and the engine will be ready for sum punishing

few other issues are the few leaks from the rear, but most cars would not have this problem even for an 19-20 yr old car
even if it does , its very easy to fix

they are very reliable cars,
powerful tho , even despite the fact that they weigh a lot
plus jump on the wagon, this cars can be the next classics lol

AND PS

i almost forgot
this is almost the first question of every new owner

if an orange light on the left side of the dash
that might look like bars, a fence,
its called the birdcage around here
it means that ur coolant is low
and jus fill up the secondary reservoir on the front of the car

Thanks for all the info man.
I'm def going to go test drive it.

I'm still a little worried about the liability.
I've read a lot of reviews stating they're great cars, but only if you can afford to keep them.

Any car worth keeping means doing regular upkeep on it and replacing parts that get old. Just depends on if it's worth it to YOU.

PooT_Nation 10-19-2006 07:59 AM

oh ya, fully understandable. But there is a point where there's regular upkeep and then there's Always upkeeping. Seriously, this is the situation i'm comming from. I owned a DSM (eclipse turbo) for a year now.

The longest I've gone driving this car w/o the CEL comming on was about...4 months.

I mean, regular upkeep is nothing. oil changes, spark plug changes, maybe a tune up here and there. But going from head gasket, to Boost leak, to Starter failure, to exhaust manifold blowing, to this to that, and now ECU frying. I can't take it!
LOL!

I'm not trying to compare Supras and DSMs. But I need something reliable. but i also want that sports car fast.

If your'e looking at a car, take it to a shop, make sure everything is working properly, hell, do a diag on it before you even take it to a shop. A piece of 3" wire will tell you if it's throwing any codes. If ANYTHING seems odd about the car, walk away. After buying said car, do a tune up, I don't care if the previous owner just did one, do one anyway for the piece of mind.

cool man.

Thanks for all the advice. ahhh excited to test drive it.

for what the guy has done to the supra i posted above. is the price reasonable?

Murd 10-20-2006 02:12 AM

If it's in as good a condition as he says it's in, 3200 is a good price. I paid 4000 for my N/A 89 in excellent condition so to get a turbo in excellent condition yes, it's a good price.
