MKIV OEM 17" wheels chrome or polished?

I'm hoping that an MKIV expert can clarify if the '96 to '98 Twin Turbo OEM 17" wheels were either chrome plated or simply polished from the manufacture? If they were just polished do you know if they put a clear coating over the top to prevent oxidation? Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you missed the question. It's not about rusting; I'm simply wondering if the wheels are POLISHED or CHROME PLATED. They are both two different finishes. Thank you.

read the post bro,
he was asking if he needs to put clearcoating, if the rims are jus aluminum polished to avoid oxidation

oxidation is a the process when oxygen molecules starts bonding with another element

when oxidation occurs with metals, rusting occurs

i can try to do the science with this, if aluminum bonds with oxygen
but jus ask sumbody that knows if aluminum rusts

but most likely no, thats jus my opinion tho

Aluminum doesn't rust the same way steel does. You do get oxide growth on it, and discoloration, but it really doesn't eat away at the aluminum. As for the wheels, I wish I could answer it for you, I would ASSUME they had a clear coat on em if they weren't painted, but I don't know for sure.

nah , most aluminum wheels, when they say polished, they mean it lol
but you'll be good tho, like he ^ said, it wont rust

Depends on the brand, Alot of aftermarkets aren't polished, but some are. A friend of mine has a 924 with fittipaldies that are aluminum with clearcoat. Some of the clearcoat chipped off and it's starting to oxidize in those spots, but the rest of the wheels look good. Being stock wheels my guess is toyota went the extra distance and coated em, but again, I'm not 100% sure as I don't own a MKIV
