something wierd under the engine!

I just bought my car today and while was looking under the hood i noticed that there was this thing being held up my a rope. It looked a little out of place. If someone can help that would be great. if you want pics let me know.

supra90turbo 07-30-2006 07:24 AM

Obviously we need a picture. Especially with that description. Sorry, but it's the truth.

dcrusupra 07-30-2006 03:56 PM

Lol, a little vague....Lets hope its not the transmission. Pics would be good.

james3189w 07-30-2006 06:12 PM

u bought the car without looking under the hood first?

Spudboy 07-30-2006 07:30 PM

I think rope is a high-tech light weight racing component.

tone loc 07-30-2006 09:15 PM

i cant get the images on can someone explain how?

tone loc 07-31-2006 05:40 AM

anyway its right between the fan and front bumper and it looks like the rope is holding up a piece of metal (not the trans)

Supra2NR 07-31-2006 06:26 AM

to the radiator? the radiator is hanging by a rope? lol jus joking

you know what maybe its the hood latch maybe the spring broke and he jus used a rope to help keep the hood shut

le me know if im right, anybody else got any guesses?

Bill UK 07-31-2006 07:39 AM

Engine under tray, oil cooler,..Toyota mechanic working under car. ?

tone loc 07-31-2006 03:02 PM

i think it might be the engine under tray what is that for?

Bill UK 07-31-2006 04:02 PM

I believe most supra owners remove them, or they have already have been removed. It's easer to work under the car to adjust the power steering belt etc.

I think the original intention of Toyota was to help the fan pull air through the radiator instead of through the bottom of the engine bay. It also keeps any water splashing up onto crank pulley belts. But as I said most people take them off and leave them off.

tone loc 08-01-2006 02:07 AM

my friend is telling me that is a skid pad for when your car bottom outs. (there is a lot of hills in my town)

burton51m 08-01-2006 03:59 AM

a thin plastic skid pad? no. or am i thinking of something elese?

Supra2NR 08-01-2006 08:35 AM

its jus a plastic on the bottom of the bay, basically is a dustguard to keep things like rock and other stuff from bouncing off the road and flying to your engine for any reason

but hea said the thing is holding a METAL piece
this is starting to be fun
any supra owners that know thier car like the back of thier hands
help out here would ya'

j3pz 08-01-2006 10:16 PM

tone loc 08-01-2006 11:34 PM

let me know if you want any more

burton51m 08-02-2006 03:46 AM

looks like it is holding up the plastic shield.

lol your previous owner nig rigged your car.

tone loc 08-02-2006 03:48 AM

lol thats awesome. should i just take it off or what should i do with it?

burton51m 08-02-2006 03:54 AM

depends.... if it is unstable and looks like it is gonna get run over take it off.

if its fine with the rope and stable i would leave it. sooner or later you might wanna fix it so it isnt nig rigged. y does it need to be held up. u missing screws? is it cracked? find out whats wrong and fix it somehow(lose the rope)

tone loc 08-02-2006 03:59 AM

ya ill take a look tommorow.

suprra_girl 08-02-2006 06:11 AM

engine undercover

as long as you have all timing covers on... then random things that may fly in shouldn't do too much damage lol

take it off or use huge washers as i imagine the holes are too big for the 10mm bolts.... if the bolts are broken off then ya, remove it ;)

tone loc 08-07-2006 05:28 AM

the front bolts were broken off and i took it off tonight.

damdog05 08-08-2006 06:19 AM

looks like you are leakin oil or something. you have that looked at yet?

supra90turbo 08-09-2006 12:41 AM

If that shield is in one piece, sell it to me. I'll give you $20 for it

j3pz 08-09-2006 12:56 AM

how effiecent are the under covers? i mean in assisting in pullin in air through the rad and stuff. just wondering whether i should put one on

supra90turbo 08-09-2006 01:37 AM

They were put on there for a reason.
They assist in high speed cooling, as the air will take the path of least resistance, I.E. not through fins of an intercooler.

tone loc 08-09-2006 02:21 AM

im planning on keeping the cover just wondering what kind of fluid is at the back right corner of the engine?

burton51m 08-09-2006 06:52 PM

your brake fluid reservoir is in the back right corner, but the under cover doesnt go back that far. you never know someone might have spilled something. next time you park your car overnight check to see if it leaked anything on the ground and you will know if your leaking.

tone loc 08-10-2006 03:49 AM

no nothing is leaking but when i bought the car the lady said it was leaking redish fluid and it was like a tiny puddle in her garage. and its been leaking for two years. It was a very small puddle of redish fluid.

dcrusupra 08-10-2006 04:01 AM

trans fluid? maybe toyota coolant?

tone loc 08-10-2006 04:28 AM

no the coolant is blue in my car maybe the trans fluid.

Supra2NR 08-10-2006 06:12 AM

maybe the lady used that orange colored coolant
cuz they do have that

tone loc 08-11-2006 02:41 AM

maybe but my is blue now and i dont think its leaking i dont have any spots in my garage

damdog05 08-11-2006 05:06 AM

isnt power steering fluid redish in color? maybe that...idk?

Supra2NR 08-12-2006 05:45 AM

but if its the power steering fluid, would you able to see it leaking with no problem?

you could use those uv light kits from autoshops so you can see where the leak is coming from

SupraSaver87 08-12-2006 01:56 PM

Trans Fluid!

Well, I would almost put money on that it would be trans fluid. Coolant would have a sweet smell, don't taste it, but it would be sweet tasting too.

Easy way to check too....wipe some off, see if its oily, if not, then its coolant, or something else.....

If it isn't leaking anymore, then you don't have anthing to worry about, if it starts up again, then DEFINATLY have that checked out.
