Snapping sound when i turn fully left or right

When i turn fully left or right and start to go i hear this loud snapping sound i think its the steering column. what do yall think?

damdog05 06-22-2006 10:45 PM

i have the same thing when iturn all the way left...id like to know too

Supra2NR 06-24-2006 04:44 PM

i think a moderator should make a sticky with this one, since i got that issue if i peel off hard with the steering fully on one side there's always this snap under the car, dunt know what that is either

j3pz 06-24-2006 11:25 PM

i also have this problem, i think its the bushings but i havent looked at them... def something in the suspension

88 MARK3 06-27-2006 07:55 PM

I have the same thing also....but only when I turned fully to the right....
Need a sticky for sure!

Ahmad88 06-27-2006 09:55 PM

it doesnt really matter to me anymore cause i might junk my supra now ever since i seized it :( but it still baffles me!

ddmcse 06-28-2006 01:40 AM

thats normal... all my toyota's do that

dcrusupra 06-28-2006 01:50 AM

Could be the upper or lower balljoints.

scruffboy 06-28-2006 11:47 AM

Left turn SNAP

I too hear a PoP when i turn the wheel hard to the left on my current Supra. I had a Chevy with this same scenario and it was the Upper Control Arm Bushing. They are made with a hard rubber that deteriorates over time, so you get metal to metal contact, which causes the pop. I found the part but realized it was very difficult to install and brought it to a mechanic.

Sorry for bringing back an old thread but you are wrong it is not so much normal as it is typical for toyota. This indicates a problem with your CV boots/joints. If it just started and isnt severe you might get lucky and only have to replace the boots. If not you'll have to replace the CV joints.

Bill UK 08-11-2006 11:21 AM

I knew there was something different about my car, (apart from the steering wheel on the right) my supra doesn’t have CV joints on the front wheels, its rear wheel drive. Must be a limited addition Supra ?

Constant Velocity Joints

CV joints allow a rotating shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. They are mainly used on front wheel drive vehicles.

No iwas just being retarded they are called half shaft cv's or something to that affect. Sorry for the incorrect nameing but thepoint still stands

Spudboy 08-11-2006 08:52 PM

Somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one with that problem. I will be changing to a TEIN Flex coilover set-up next week and plan on looking into that noise while I'm at it. I'll let you all know what I find...if anything.

Does anybody have experience discontinuing the use of the TEMS? If so, any hints? Did you just disconect at the shocks, secure and leave all wiring in place?

Supra2NR 08-12-2006 05:40 AM

i dont think your gonna have any problems if you leave the wires there
theyre arent gonna do anything anyways
right?

scruffboy 08-12-2006 01:34 PM

Popping Sound

Are you guys positive it ain't a bushing? cuz that would be my first guess. Those things wear out and you get metal on metal. my 2 cents.

SupraSaver87 08-12-2006 01:45 PM

Well......I dunno

I have the SAME THING...wow...how common. I was told by a retired mechanic, who worked for Toyota for 30 years, that it could be both, however after this many years, and the fact that I have to turn ALL the way to one side for it to happen, that it is more than likely a bushing. A wearing out CV would make it harder to steer...you would notice it in the assisted steering.

I have not gotten mine checked out yet, but I will soon.

ddmcse 08-14-2006 08:56 PM

it's not a cv joint

Well uh geez thanx for telling us that.... Would his highness like to tell us what he thinks it is. Oh and I believe i stated before I messed up by saying CV joint i meant to say CV half shaft. So we know its not a CV joint. but thanks for the input.

SupraSaver87 08-14-2006 09:12 PM

Well.....

I was just saying CV joint for a general term.

Bill UK 08-14-2006 10:18 PM

You mean all Supras have rear wheel drive and mine isn’t special ! Shucks ( as they say over here) have I spelt that right by the way?

Right back to the original thread, a possible cause of crunching/grinding noise at full lock could be the steering bump stops are worn (see pic) they consist of a plastic cap fitted over the adjusting bolt, very cheap and easy to replace.

Bill UK 08-17-2006 02:47 PM

Well I did get the CV bit right, welsh actually.

Supra2NR 08-17-2006 07:38 PM

dont take the joke too seriously
we tend to stereotype pple here
its kind of a mild racism
seems normal here in america

doesnt matter what you really are
jus where you came from
so dont even bother
they mean no harm or offense lol

but what do i need to get to replace that part
and have you done it yourself
if you do,
post up if it does stop the snapping sound

marc 08-17-2006 08:29 PM

i too have this problem

scruffboy 08-17-2006 09:40 PM

Hey Bill UK

I'm the guy who razzed you for your spelling, hope you don't hold it against me. I blew up your pic and saw what looks like a bolt. You say there is some kind of plastic cover that fits over it? If you do the fix, post another pic so we can see what you're talking about. Thanks.

No problem I took it as a complement! end of subject.

I'm probably 5 hrs in front of you guys the time is 23.55 pm so I will keep it short. The red arrow shows the steering stop adjusting screw covered with a plastic cap. The blue arrow is the lower suspension arm. On full lock the steering stop plastic cap will make contact with the suspension arm. If the plastic cap has worn through you will have metal to metal contact.

Ahmad88 08-18-2006 10:50 PM

yea it did kinda feel like it was stuck to something, well thx for the info but its no more useful to me but atleast u solved this problem for many others, i actually enjoyed driving the supra the seats held u in nicely and the handling felt like rally style. i could feel the power of the car just by sitting in it, it has that feeling with me. if i could i really would buy another 88 & up supra if it was less then 2k and no problems whatsoever! cause im looking to buy a car now for less then 2k, i live in houston,tx harris county if your in the area and selling a good car for that price or less lmk plz thanks
