Need advice for starting older car, not driven.

I just bought a 1988 Supra that has not been driven in two years. What problems can I expect in trying to start the car? It was driven prior to being parked.
If it won't start, can I tow it or do I need to trailer it?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

A Few Things First

Don't tow an automatic trans car.

Change the oil before trying to start it.

Fresh gas. Syphon out the old gas first.

Check the coolant level, top up with water for now.

Check trans oil level.

Power steering oil level.

Look around under hood for anything unusual or disconnected.

Have a knowledgable friend or mechanic help you, if you are unsure.

What problems can I expect in trying to start the car?

Besides needing a brand new battery, Id watch out for chewed through wires under the hood or fuel pump. Ive seen it on a 1990 ford truck parked for a couple of years.

Thanks for the advice. I installed a new battery, checked the fluids and turned the key. It started right up. Filled it up with premium gas, checked the air in the tires, said a prayer, and drove it from Orlando to Tampa. It drove like a charm, now I can start to give it some TLC. Thanks again

Help me with supra

My car sat idle for a year and it wont start start I was told that it was igniter and I just changed it, but it wont start i had a new battery in last year but never drove it. I tried to jump start and fifuired new battery would rejuve, do you think that the battery may be the cause? Keep in mind it is new and I was jump starting it from a 4 runner.

You drove it from orlando to Tampa? thats about how far I drove mine :-)
I used to live on McDill AFB so good to see another Tampa Bay guy :-) Live in Cali now. i used to go running on Bayshore Blvd all the time :-) Anyway back to the topic at hand. Mine sat for a year, WOULD NOT PASS SMOG for the life of it, checked the cat, turned out it was fine (even though I still took the damn thing off and dunked it in Citric Acid which did clean some gunk).
So I did the following:
Checked and noticed that the guy before me had taken off and redid most of the EGR system including:
The BVSV valve (top nipple was broken $5 USD on ebay)
The Charcoal Canister (another $5 on ebay)*/end EGR*
There is more to what he took off but it was mostly Vacuum Hoses.

Also took out the Spark Plugs and was absolutly shocked at the quality of them. Horrible looking, and not even platinums as recommended, they were normal resistors and some brand I have never heard of.. However I took them to a mechanic and he said it was typical after having sat for a year, not to mention I have pulled the spark plugs for checking and they seem to be doing great. I replaced them with Bosch Double Platinums, boy what a diffrence. The stock preheater hose (as posted before when I thought was a problem with the AFM) had a cut in it so I replaced it with Spectre Air intake Pipe and Spectre Poweradder intake which I moved to the bumper and is now a semi cold air intake. Replaced the Spark Plug wires with Nology Hotwires, again what a diffrence. I still have to fix the Knock Sensor . I also dropped in this stuff called I can't remember but it was something like HPX or something which cleans out all the gunk and stuff (and i swear by it, the state of forida actually ised it in their cars for a year and noticed that it reduced smog outut in thier vehicles 24%. I took my car to get smogged and it passed in the NORM rather than Gross Polluter like it had before. See its just the simple stuff you can do to make your car like new again. i still have my roblems every now and again, but I love my car. :)

Figure I'd add a little to this rather old thread

I recently started my supra after sitting for 5 years. I was actually pretty surprised how easy everything went. Just get rid of the old gas, fill with new. I am a fan of sea foam although it appears that other members don't recommend using it.

I put a little tranny fluid in each cylinder after I removed the spark plugs. Checked the plugs to ensure that they would at least survive one more start. I also added some new oil although didn't bother to change it until I got it started and running for a sec.

Prior to starting the car I unplugged each coil. I then cranked the starter for about 5 seconds, then waited 30. I did this a few times. Finally I connected the battery and fired it up. Ignore the smoke coming out of the exhaust.

I drove it to my garage and then did basic maintenance and tune up procedures. Car runs great now.

I was going to say getting rid of the old gas can be a major helper!

batmmannn 05-12-2010 11:20 PM

Just started mine after 6 or 8 years

Mine sat because of a bad starter and because I had another Supra. Other Supra developed a head noise so finally I laid in the driveway in leaves and sticks and busted knuckes getting the starter changed from below. Penetrating oil in the jugs overnight in 4 of the 6 cylinders, cranked it pushing oil out the next day, put the old plugs back in and added 2 gallons fresh fuel and it's alive showing a third of a tank of basically paint thinner at this point and its kicking topped off coolant with water for now till I do a flush. Critters had built a nest in left side of exhaust blowing out the muffler so I will need a muffler. Tires were still good but who knows for how long, a relief cause tires cost money for this car.

Scared the shit out of me because it started blowing steam out of the exhaust on a round the block trip, happened as I was going up a large hill. Has cleared out now so I am guessing it had some water in the exhaust. Runs like a car on 8 year old gas and old plugs looking forward to fresh gas and a nice run down these WV windy roads.

Edited today.

You might want to replace your timing belt as well. I think I broke mine today.

ricer 05-31-2010 07:20 PM

on your 86and a half what ended up being the proble with the tapping, i just baught a 87 trubo and it is makeing a simalar noise and i dont want a shop to charge me up the wazoo for a simple fix

batmmannn 05-31-2010 08:47 PM

Tapping

Not sure yet, it could be a timing issue or it could be a broken valve spring. Not sure. I have it to some degree on both my cars. One fella told me he put a washer in between the distributor tightening adjustment bolt and the head to make the distributer pull slightly away from his head and this took it away from his. Others have mentioned it could be arcing plug wires or spark knock from incorrect timing. I have been working on the Red Supra. my Black 87 is the one with the loud noise. Once I finish getting the Red one road worthy I will try to find time to work on my black one. Doing the exhaust and tires now.

thanks, that sorta helps, the guy who rebuilt the motor torld me he thinks its a rocker, but with all the things up with it right now theres no telling, and i am in the same with the tail pipe stuff mine is only half way back off the turbo so i have to get a custom one made, and i got a oil leek from somthing to, the life of a supra owner is not a cheap one i guess

batmmannn 06-01-2010 03:31 AM

Stop right there

OK BIG RED FLAG! If the guy that told you he rebuilt this motor said he thinks the noise is a rocker you have a big problem. This motor does not use rockers nor does it have any. The cams ride on top of the valves. There are no rockers!!!! This guy is feeding you a line of crud.

Check air filter and make sure no critters got in there.
