Igniter help

Hello Supra Fans,

I have a 1979 Celica Supra MK1, MA46. This car is all original and in near showroom condition. I am the original owner and bought it off the showroom floor in March of 1979. It’s been a great car for the last 80,000 miles. Last year I started to have a problem. When the car would heat up, the fuel pump would cut out but not completely and I would lose about 90% power. If I pulled over to the side of the road and let it cool for a bit then start it again everything would be fine until it heated up again and then the same all over. I replaced the fuel pump but the problem persisted so my mechanic replaced the fuel pump again, no improvement. Could I have gotten another bad pump? These are massed produced after market pumps. So I replaced the coil, distributor, plugs, rotor and contact points for the efi. Still the problem persisted. I think I have replaced everything to do with getting electrical to the fuel pump except for the igniter. Everyone I have spoken to tells me it’s not that so I did my own experiment. While idling in the driveway I took a blow dryer and heated up the igniter, and yes, while sitting there it started to sputter because the fuel pump was not getting a strong electrical current to pump fuel at the correct psi. At least that is what I think is going on. So for the last eight months I have been on a mission to find an igniter for this car. No body can seem to help me. I have had dozens of wreckers from across the country tell me they had it or could locate one but it always was the wrong one or one off a latter Toyota. The part numbers on the igniter are 89620-14200 andND131100-1860. Since parts for this car are so hard to come by I was wondering if there is a performance part that would replace the resistor and igniter assembly. As I understand it the igniter sends power to both the fuel pump and the contact points in the distributor for the injectors so is there a part that cold do all that instead. I don’t really want to spend thousands of dollars to completely replace the whole electrical and fuel system. If it comes to that then I’ll end up selling the car to someone who wants to put that kind of effort into it, the 2007 Supra looks tempting. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, please feel free to forward to anyone you think might be able to help, Thanks.

Did you replace the fuel pump relay??? They have been known to fail when over heated.

How do you know the fuel pressure dropped when you heated the ignitor?? did you have a pressure gauge hooked into the fuel system??

I've onlt replace a handful of ignitors in all my years (to many to say here), and 5 at Toyota.

Yes, the relay was replaced with the first pump that I had replaced. Also I have a pressure regulator on the fuel rail and I could see it drop and the purr of the pump would dissapear.

have you tried bypassing the resistor to troubleshoot?
12volt the pump and see how it goes
