Project Help

I bought a set of Valve Cover Gaskets at Autozone for $10.99. I snatched them up because I believe that must be a mistake as I have never seen them that cheap. I am now waiting for the gasket (part 17128 and nobody seemed to know what I was talking about except for one toyota dealer) used on the air intake connector (I have an N/A) to the intake manifold. It is V-shaped off the throttle body and has two ports. Anyway, here is my question. When I bought the v.c. gaskets, I noticed on the screen it said "with or with out grommets". What are these grommets and will I need them to replace the rubber gaskets into the valve covers? Also, has anyone ever done this work who might be able to give me some pointers? It looks pretty straight up but there are a lot of hoses and things. I have taken plenty of pictures in case I need to refer back to them, but I was wondering if there is anything in particular that may be hard to get to or that gets in the way or something of that nature if someone has experience doing this. Also, I plan to inspect the plugs (they are less than a year old) but was wondering if there is anything else I should do while I have it taken apart this far. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

the gromets are round rubber pieces like washers under the bolts used to clamp down the valve covers .they might be flattened too much and need to be replaced but it's not earth shattering , you'll need to order from toyota though
the stock screw/sbolts suck ,they are philips and they strip easily
find a cheap replacement like an allen bolt .
tighten down in a cross pattern, don't tighten down one corner you want apply pressue evenly as you clmap down the cover
change the plugs but pay attention to the gap on each plug. installing new spark wires would be a good thing at the same time . you are liable to find a great deal of oil around the spark plugs
if you do change the plugs and the wires , do one at a time so you don't confuse what wire goes to what plug , you know firing order .
this job should be straight forward
i think i have that gasket you are talking about hanging on my garage wall it's left over from a gasket kit that had n/a and turbo gaskets

17128 as you mentioned in the picture.
Toyota calls it the "surge tank gasket" and is included in any intake manifold gasket set that you will purchase. It will come with the lower (to head) the middle (to plenum) and the y-pipe gasket and should cost you no more than $15.

Toyota rip-off

What a rip off Toyota parts centers are. I have bought a lot of stuff from the same place and they charge me $28 for gasket 17128. Unbelievable. That is why I try to get everything I can from Autozone. I'll be starting this valve cover gasket job today so wish me luck guys. I hope everything goes well. I've got little cups all set up to hold the bolts with each one marked, and I am going to use tape to number the hoses. Plus I took plenty of before pictures, just in case. I'm not a real gearhead but this looks like something I can do, and you need to get that throttle body and Y pipe off just to do a tune-up, so I better learn now if I want to save some money in the future. Also there is that satisfaction that comes with doin it yourself. Thanks for the help.
