code 52 knock sensor can't pass emissions

Would a knock sensor cause it to run rich? I've changed out the injectors, new tps, cold start injector and got it down about 70% from where it was. He did a printout at the test station and it shows running rich at high rpm in 1st and 5th. The rest of the gears it's flat at the bottom of the chart. The car runs awesome but I can't get by emissions. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

vsv switch egr underside of the intake near the back there is one for fuel also worth looking at simple test determines if it's shot with an ohm meter to check continuity .
i replaced a lot of stuff getting to this one part that was toast
as soon as i replaced the egr vsv my mixture was good .
i thought oxygen sensor , cold start injector , cold start switch but the vsv did it

Thanks. I'll try that when I'm off next Monday. What exactly does a knock sensor do? Thanks.

KS is there to sense "pinging" when the fuel is 'pre-detonating'. The computer will back the timing up until the ping is gone. It usually only happens under a load (like during the test).

Running mid-grade or premium gas helps to eliminate pinging, if yours does ping.

If your check light is on, you will fail the test (unless the guy lets you slide).

i did a simple test using the diagnostic ports on my 89 supra turbo
and i got the error for knock sensor.

not sure where the knock sensor is cause the manual doesnt say but if theres anyone here who can tell me where that is..

also my car does seem to be running rich as well cause when im sittin at a light or just sitting in a drive through the smell of my exhaust is pretty bad.real strong..

anytips thanks everyone ;]

if i have to replace something like that where would i be able to get one?

You have two knock sensors on your Supra, both on the drivers-side of the engine block below the intake plenum. One is toward the front of the block, the other is partially hiding behind the starter. Your error code could by the KS itself or it could be because of bad wiring to the KS.

You can pick up some short wiring kits from Toyota which will work for your sensors and which might well solve your code 52. Can't remember the part # right off hand but I think it's for one of their pickups which uses the same KS. There's also a re-wire mod using coax which will fix bad KS wiring.

The sensors themselves you can get from Toyota or from someone on the forum most likely.

The replacement wiring segment for the KS is Toyota Part #82219-89103. That listing is for another vehicle entirely, but the KS's are the same for both. All you have to do is splice in the new wiring & connector and hook it up. If the problem was just the wiring rather than the KS itself, this should take care of it.

so i look at my engine and on the driverside i see something that looks like
that part that ddmcse posted a link to.

it was hanging and the wires were disconnected/broken off.

it also appears that the mount for that ks is broken. im not exactly sure where it is since it was hanging ill have to look at it later..

hopefully after i test it like that link showed or this picture see if its good or not...

That's a diagram of one of your VSV's, not a knock sensor. You can bolt it up anywhere or nowhere so long as the wiring connector is secure and you have the vacuum lines to it hooked up properly.

oh lol...

<-- starter noobie mechanic

well i still need to check that cause my mixture seems to be running rich....
like the fumes from my car are pretty strong.

i guess i gotta go searchin for the 2 KS's..
