Cold Air system?

What exactly does a cold air system do? What are the benefits over a stock intake system?

Thanks in advance!

a cold air intake allows the engine to breathe more air by reducing the air restriction by setting an air filter in the open (not in an air intake box)

air in the engine is hot air, air outside the engine bay is cold air. cai brings cold air to the engine via putting it in a space outside the engine bay, heat shields, etc. ive even seen a car that has a piece of tubing sitting in the grill leading to the intake

i've seen one where they have taken a piece of ducting like they use on a dryer and ran it to the intake from underneath the car

So would a cold air system be the best intake system to go with for a mkiii n/a supra? If so, could anyone drop me a few links to what model I should get and where to buy? Thanks!

no one really makes a cold air intake for the mk3, all ive seen is filters any ways. also im not too sure the cai would be all that great because the intake piping runs across the engine, and im pretty sure that will heat up the piping. i dont know if its significant enough to cause any performance restrictions though. when i start working on my engine, id like to redo the whole intake system...er i mean maybe have a nice piece of chrome pipe leading from afm to turbo, from turbo to ic, from ic to front mount intake manifold (instead of the T-shaped on already on there).

Is k&n fipk top of the line?

What kind of increase in mileage can I expect from a new cai system over the stock intake? .5-1mpg perhaps or am I overrating this all..

it depends on who you talk to. i personally prefer the k&n. k&n says you get a 10% increase in hp (10% of 200 is a 20hp increase) but you can expect 5-10hp

ive heard something similar to this. if you see reviews they say this is the best for the supra, but hey anyone can that about anything. so it really comes down to how much you want to spend and your preferences(crome, etc)
